Steering rack help

So I'm rebuilding my steering rack and I'm now at the part where I am suppose to remove the guts of the whole assembly. The directions say to turn the spindle counter clockwise and pull and that whole part will come out of the unit. I can get the spindle to turn but I've been pulling with all of my might and I can only pull the guts out about an eighth of an inch. Anyone know any tricks to this or am I doing something wrong?

Try loosening the bolts on the tensioner plate. This should loosen the tension pushing the bar against the valve gear.

Be very carfull how you put the seals back in, direction wise. I put the one in the end of the tube in backwards. They don't come back out because you can't catch the edge. I had to replace the entire tube. If you bought a kit, it comes with everything except the vacum transfer tube. I just got a piece or regular clear tube from a parts place.

Thanks for the advice, right now I'm stuck getting the one out of the bottom of the control unit. Clarks garage said this would be a PITA and I've been destroying it as suggested for about an hour now. Anyone have any suggestions on making this easier?

I am not sure what problem you are having, but if it helps, here is a picture of the rack I rebuilt in my daughter's 924S.

Make sure you install the seal in the left side of the gold tube in the correct direction as I put mine in backwards and had to get another from Rennbay. That seal fell out on the table when I removed it initially and I had to guess which way it needed to go back in. I guessed wrong and had to tear it all back apart again

Hey Tim...haven't seen you post in a while...good to see you back. Hey, I'll be doing mine in a couple more weeks...I'll probably be emailing you for directions! There was suppose to be a video a group was working on and I was kind of waiting for that....but if it's not ready in a couple more weeks, I'll be needing some help with mine.

Tom, I am on the 911 and OT forums all the time. I kind of get in surfing habit and forget other groups every now and then. If I can be of any help, let me know. E-mail me if you need to contact me, as I often forget to check my pm box for weeks!

Ok, so I'm pretty much done but I have 2 tiny o rings left and one larger one. I went through all the steps and at no point could I figure out where these two little o-rings go. They are about a quarter inch across and I'm sure I am going to wake up tomorrow and look over the whole process and find out where the larger one goes but right now I'm tired. Can someone help me out with these two little guys?

TNT, I think I had some extras also, allthough I can't say for sure as I had also rebuilt my pump and I definitely had some left over from that. I bought the seal kits from Rennbay, and I called to ask about the extra seals, and they stated that their kits were kind of generic to fit a wide variety of years and models. You may want to give them a call, however I do not recall anywhere on the rack where 1/4 dia o-rings went.

Is there any particular type of gear grease I should be using when putting this back together and is there anywhere I should smear it onto aside from the gear shaft? Any other things I need to know before reassembly?
