Pelican oldy-924 newbie - Elec Window?
 
Greeting all,

This is my first posting over here on the water-cooled side of the BBS. Just bought a nice 87 924s. Unfortunately, both electric windows stopped operating.

I get no power at the connectors to the switches. I get power at the fuse (#8) on the secondary fuse panel. The back of #8 fuse has three connections; 2 jumpers to other fuses, and one that appears to lead up into the dash somewhere.

I've checked continuity between the connectors on driver & passenger side, but nothing gets though except the ground (brown wire) in slot marked "C".

Any ideas where the wires from the window switches lead, and whether they change colors (via another harness)?

Are there known locations where potential breaks in the wires can occur?

Any thoughts?

try checkin in the rubber piece between the door and the piller, the flexing can break them if the wires get hung up on something

Power first comes from the relay under the dash just above the gas pedal. Check the connections on it. Pull the plug and clean the pins on the relay. Relay may be hot to the touch.

A good relay should give you power to one of the pins on the plugs for the drivers side window switches. As mentioned above the wiring through the rubber conduit can become pinched and break. I've had the bad relay connection but no breaks in the wires -- yet.

sorry to hijack.

what if only driver window works. passenger motor was tested and is fine. switches were swapped and still no go.

Wiring for the passenger window comes off of the drivers side switch for the passenger window. If the driver can run the passenger window and swapping the switches from side to side does not fix the problem could be broken wires. Then it could also be the switches. Have to remember that these switches are close to or over 20 years old. Cleaning them may help other wise replace them.

Jer - Thanks - I looked there and no breaks yet.

SoCal - Are you certain the 87 924S has the relay? I was led to believe it didn't. It makes sense though, since I can't locate any wiring from the switches near the relays/fuses in the left corner.

I'll dig around under there after work this evening.

good diagram. according to that all 5 contacts are utilized on all switches.

the passenger switch on the driver's side was missing one of the rocker contacts.

Contact like inside the switch or one of the pins on the back?

Sure enough the relay was there. I'll add some pics once I get them downloaded.

I'd rather not say who told me so as not to embarrass them, as they probably should have known otherwise.

Anyhow, I'll be stopping by the local Porsche parts store to see if they have a new relay.

Thanks for the nice diagram. I just ordered a Haynes manual. Can you suggest any others that would be useful?

on the inside of the switch. for the driver's side if you open it theres two strips that rock back and forth. my passenger side switch was missing one of these. unless it's supposed to be like that? from the looks of the diagram it uses all contacts on the switch.

Switches have all been the same from my experiance. Check the part numbers on all the switches.

OK a little more info.

The relay on the pic above shows a 5-pin, the one I pulled out has the center pin missing. The center wire is brown/yellow (85b) and the brown wire (85) does appear to go to ground.
So now I'm curious whether the correct relay was being used.

The VW part number (does that mean this is another NARP?) is 321-919-505, 12V, 25amp.

Relay you have is for the early 944's. You want #944-615-112-01. The 924S is a mixture of the early 944's and the later 944's. This is one example where the wiring is from the later 944's.

Here are a few pics for future newbies like myself.

Black panel hides the relay for the power sunroof/other accessories, and the relay for the power windows.

One, possibly two screws on the face of the cover, and two screws at the edge of the carpet to the right.

If I'm reading this right, does this mean that failure of the passenger window to work on the passenger's side switch (but works on the driver's passenger switch ) could be down to broken wires as they come through the passenger's AND the driver's door?

I replaced all the switches on both doors but can still only operate the passenger window from the driver's side. Still no joy.

How do you access the wires that pass through the door if you want to splice in new wiring? Can it be done by removing the carpeting on the side of the footwell? Or does it have to be done by pulling as much wire as possible out via the rubber booted section passing through the door jamb?

I've visually inspected the wiring coming through the door jamb but cannot see anything obviously amiss and was thinking of just putting in new wires regardless - given nothing else has worked thus far.
