Red face Brake Pads to thick to fit ?

I have a 1985 (early) 944.Put on new rotors and can't get enough room by compressing the caliper piston and sliding the caliper frame on the out board pad as far as possible to allow for installation of the new pads. Is there a trick I am missing here ??

Only missing enough room by a fraction of an inch but in might s well be a foot. I just won't fit.

Stephen

Try loosening the bleeder screw so the caliper will be easier to compress. Make sure you keep pressure on the piston while the bleeder is open so it doesn't suck air in.

how are you compressing the piston?

i use waterpump pliers on the back of the pad and caliper.

if you loosen the bleeder screw you'll end up bleeding the brakes.

A C-clamp should get you more than enough room.....

If you cannot get the piston to compress all the way, you may consider taking the caliper off the hub and using a c-clamp with a block of wood over the piston to compress it. I would open the bleeder valve so the fluid has a place to go and wont overflow the master cylinder. Of course have a means of catching the fluid coming out. You should atleast bleed or change the brake fluid with the pads anyway.

I will be changing my pads sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. I was suprised to see how thick new pads are, they are like 5 times the thickness of my worn out pads right now!

Which pad did you change to?

I have a problem with my new pads as well. My new front and back pads don't want to fit with the new rotors. What is the thickness of the pad supposed to be when new?
the new ones I have are all 3/4" thick.
No problem fitting the old pads in, they measure about 9/16" thick. The old pads weren't worn out just a mis matched set.

And there is no fluid in the system, we just rebuilt everything.

The outer pad has a slot in the backing part to fit into the slider "pin".
If the pad isn't in completely the inner pad won't fit.

Put the outer pad in first.
