Cruise Control on 1984 944
Hi all,
My cruise control is not working. I took it to the shop, and they tested a spare brain that came with the car. The spare brain did not work. Does anyone know of the common faults that typically occur on the cruise control system? What should I check? I would appreciate any advice for a newbie. THANKS! Andrew (Portland) |

Welcome to the group.
Start with the simple things first - the cruise control brains don't go out very often. First, check your brake lights - burned out brake light - no cruise. Secondly, check the cruise control relay - Check fuse as well Lasty, are your steering column switches functioning properly? Steering column switches are a common problem with these cars. AFJuvat

Cruise Control
Thanks for the reply!
I've just collected the car from the shop. They tested the cruise control switch assembly and the soleniod assembly. Both work fine. They also tested the spare cruise control brain that I bought from Ebay. They reported that both the original and spare ECU were not working. A check with Porsche North America shows that the last original ECU is available for $400+! Nope, the price is not an option for me... I may have to live without cruise control for a while...unless I am able to locate another from a wreck shop such as Parts Heaven, etc. Andrew (in Portland) |

How about this, on my way back from the Ventura car show (about 100 miles each way) I decided to play with the cruise control, worked fine for a little while, but the seams in the famous Ventura highway began to play havoc with it. Finally hit a big one and it just turned off. Some time ago my windshield wipers also refused to turn off, they kept running in delay mode so I pulled the delay relay and just work the wipers manually. I suspect the connections in the steering column. How difficult is it to get into those and can the be cleaned/repaired of should I replace them?
Thanks

If you have an early model, you can carefully pry the switches open and clean/manipulate them. - this is detailed in the Haynes manual.
85.5 and later, they are sealed. Replacement is the only option. AFJuvat
