oil spill

Chaps, just bought a 1977 924 - have managed to get it running albeit with difficulty but after a short while oil starts to spill through the air filter box - could this be due to the timing being out a little or something more?Any ideas?

Oil spill

Dear Cabby:
I posted a message with 0 replies and thought I'd see how common that is. Maybe it was something I ate....

Anyway, when oil starts to show in the air filter housing, it's usually a sign of excessive blow-by and the need for an engine overhaul. Usually, it's caused by broken or worn piston rings, especially the compression rings. Bad oil rings will just cause blue exhaust smoke.

The blow-by pressurizes the crankcase and forces oil out of the recirculation hose into the air filter housing.

That's a best guess from afar, but it sounds like engine rebuild time.

a little bit of oil in the air box is normal... anything else, and i'd be worried..
