motor mounts and fuel mileage
This is an observation of mine and I'm wondering if others have had similar results. I just had my motor mounts replaced. Besides the usual, "Holy crap! my car doesn't shake," I swear my fuel mileage jumped from 16 mpg to ~23+ mpg. I'm on my first full tank after the R&R and I'm currently at 310 miles on the trip meter with about 1/4 tank + reserve (8 gallons left on a 21 gallon tank) left.
My motor mounts were so bad that the engine was literally touching the frame of the car, causing a low knocking sound (thank the Porsche gods it wasn't rod bearings!). I thought I could feel the car almost feel like it was leaning to the side when I tried to accelerate from the stop. Given those symptoms, I imagine that it's quite possible that these new motor mounts are actually increasing my fuel mileage. The only other things I've replaced recently were new shocks and springs; I'm having a difficult time imagining how those would make for better fuel efficiency. In addition, those items threw my alignment out of wack. So, if anything, the suspension work has decreased my fuel mileage so far. Anyways, I'm a happy owner once again although my wallet isn't too happy. New mounts: $200 Labor for new mounts: $200 Not having to look at bouncing headlight beams and through vibrating mirrors (maybe better fuel mileage too?): priceless.
