944 Distributor Cap Question

I have an '86 944 in need of some TLC. Right now I'm working on the ignition system and I've run into something that puzzles me a little.

The distributor cap is loose. I've attached it and followed a pretty standard cap replacement procedure, but I can't seem to get it to seat against the engine tightly.

Any thoughts or suggestions about what might be wrong? I looked through the archives, but didn't see a similar problem, so I thought I'd ask. If a picture or something would help advice I could post one.

More than likely one of the spring action bolts is not seated right. Does the top or bottom lift off easily while the other end is on solid?

You really need to press in fairly far and rotate the screw in order to get it to lock correctly.
