Great snowmobile

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later, we got a fair amount of snow last night. With the choices in my driveway the 44 was chosen to trudge through the winter wonderland this morning, pre plow help. This thing was great, I was very impressed. Being an S it is a little weak under 3500 so it was easy to keep it out of the "band" and still have enough to pull hills. I have a feeling this thing will go in a deep snow very well, as long as I don't get hung.
Anybody else like thier 44 in the snow?

I had to do the obligatory doughnuts in the parking lot at work, while my boss just shook his head.

Re: Great snowmobile

I bought my 944 9-10 years ago in December. It started snowing that night so I had to drive her home in about 3 inches of snow. I thought the car did quite well since about 50% of the weight is over the rear axle. It was nothing like the old rear wheel drive American cars I have driven in the snow.

BTW it is a good time to practice your low speed drifting manuvers

ATM mine is not great, as it needs an alignment, the tires appear to be more of a dry tire (Pirreli's), and the fronts are worn on the insides due to the bad alignment. It really wants to swap ends under any amount of wheelspin. I bet it would be fun if it was better set up for it. Or maybe it's just me being a wimp

Doing donuts in a rear wheel drive car is inevitable.

I've found the 944 to be a very nice snow car, but have only driven it with the summer-only AVS ES100s on it which makes it pretty worthless - it's well balanced and controllable, just has no traction. I just bought snow tires for it, and it did actually snow last night, but the car is currently in the care of a local mechanic to sort out some issues

Go out and get a winter beater. $500 Subaru wagon AWD.

Can you say AWD donuts? I literally had the car spinning like a tank...it was amazingly fun and I highly recommend buying a Subaru just for this reason!

Unfortunately, the one week I have snow my dad has his Subaru in the shop. So I couldn't steal it from him. My 944 kinda scares me in the snow, the rear won't follow the nose.

We had about 2 inches last week.. thought about taking the 924S for some donuts.... but didn't as it was thawing and it would have gotten it too dirty.. so it sits under a cover in a heated garage.

I have 4 205mm Blizzaks on mine and it goes like a tank. I haven't been stuck all winter. You need to be confident with the gas and have a sense of what is 'about' to happen because you need to keep your foot in it to avoid getting stuck. But, aside from that, it goes okay. With the ABS (which I usually dislike in a car) I have to say that it does stop straight and has no tendency to swap ends under braking at all.

I do notice one odd thing though. When the car is idling, the temperature of the hot air drops to luke warm almost immediately. It's annoying. Ideas?

Maybe a weak water pump or a clogged heater core.

Is there a way to flush the heater core?

You can do a regualar radiator flush and turn the heater to full heat which will flush the heater core at the same time as the radiator. If you want to do the heater core by itself, then use the pipe going along the bottom of the cam tower and the heater control valve at the back of the engine to run hoses from and flush manually. To do the heater core by itself, you would need to connect a hose to both of those pipes and it would require a water pump in the middle to get the water/flush to flow through the heater core.

Thanks. Sounds like a spring time job. I have no heated garage right now and it's about 10 degrees. I hate winter.

Yeah, it's pretty cold here today too. It only got up to 75. I almost had to put my jacket on. That wasn't very nice was it?
