It only engages the fuel pump in the 'start' position.

The pump starts to run in the start position until the engine turns over a certain number of RPMs meaning the engine is running. The computer knows this through the speed sensor near the flywheel. If you suspect the fuel pump isn't running, then jump past the fuel pump relay using the procedures in Clarks garage. if still no fuel pressure start checking voltage at the fuel pump. Usually a DME relay that causes the fuel pump to not start when it's suppose to...always carry a spare in your glove box...cheaper than a wrecker and good insurance.
