Sunroof Help

The sunroof on my '85 has not operated since I bought the car. The motor turns when I press the switch in one direction, but nothing happens. The manual process doesn't do anything in either direction.

It seems as if the cable is not turning at all. Could the connection between the motor and the cable be stripped or broken?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Vin

Usual cause of this would be stripped gears in the gearboxes at the rear of the sunroof. It's also possible that the clutch is slipping - there's a clutch between the motor and the cable that is supposed to slip if there is a binding issue with the sunroof, but generally the gears strip first.

My gears are stripped again and I just replaced them a couple years ago. I think I will back off the adjustment on the clutch this time...

if its an early system with only one drive in the middle (white box) between the risers - then your gears are metal and won't strip.

the problem could be right where the cable is attached to the motor (as in gear in the motor itself), it could also be that your main drive (white box mentioned above) fell apart.

My solution to ****ed up stupid sunroof system in these cars is to convert to manual type.

I kinda think the problem is at the motor. I can see what looks to be part of the cable out of the rear of the motor assembly and it does not move when either the motor turns or I manually operate the mechanism.

I haven't taken the motor section apart yet, but it looks like I'll have to, even only to see if it's binding.

Thanks guys.
