Need help on steering question>>>

K so I lifted both sides of the car up on jacks. I sat infront of each tire and tried to move them by pushing on them, it moves slightly but feels very loose like the steering rack is moving too.

Could it be the steering rack needs new bushings? Or do I need new tie rods? Or any thoughts?

By the way its a 1983 944.

To properly check for worn tie rods you have to lock the steering rack. There is a plastic bolt/plug on the front. When you remove it you will see where you can thread in a bolt. The bolt must have a pointed end to match the dimple in the rack and long enough to reach it. This will lock the rack so you can move the wheels individually, right and left while watching for play in the tie rods.

Be sure to remove the bolt and replace the plug before you drive it.

You can also check for wear in the steering link u-joints with the locking bolt in. Usually it's the top u-joint that wears.
