ticking in the rear
my car has a loud ticking noise that comes from the back while the car in gear and accelerating. As the car goes faster the ticking is faster. If I push in the clutch the noise goes away. Any ideas?

thank you Clarks Garage
CV Joint maintenance is an important part of any routine maintenance checks. However, it is often neglected until the CV Joints start to give problems. CV Joints normally let you know when they start to go bad. You'll hear a clicking sound coming from the rear of the car that can normally be pinpointed to one side of the car. The clicking may be heard during normal driving or in a turn on the outside rear axle. |

mine did what you say, and it turned out to be one of the rear bearings.

If anyone has tips on how to test for a bad CV I am interested. I cant find any cracks in the boots but cant feel any grease inside when I squeeze them.

I have a write up on CV joints I'll share if you PM your email, I just recently did the job on my car. It helped alot. One thing I forgot to mention in my write up was be sure to pack LOTS of grease in the joint before assembly...minor detail. LOL

Oh yeah, forgot to say, Mine did something similar...sounded kind of like a one-legged horse following me. I have some diagnostics in my write up though.

Is it worth repacking the CV or is this just a temporary solution. I see that 944online has rebuilt axles for $140.
Bholmes, I sent you a pm. |

email sent. if you're going the rebuilt route, parts america offers a set of axles that after core charge is $66 for one axle with both cv joints on it...so multiply by two for the whole car. this is the route i took, some may critisize it for not being factory porsche, but i think it will work out OK.

You can try repacking and rotating the half shafts to get more life out of them. Others have tried this, if they're not too bad this will extend the life of the half shafts. The half shafts are the same as the VW Van.
