Clutch Master Cylinder

Well today my clutch peddle went to the floor and stayed their, I used my foot to pull it back up and it started working again but if I do not push it fast and hard it will hit the floor. I got home and looked at it again, brake fluid on the carpet under the peddle. I guess I need a new master cylinder or a rebuild. I can find a complete master cylinder but cannot find a rebuild kit. Anyone know if a rebuild kit available and where I can get one. A new master cylinder cost $89.00. I would rather rebuild it and the slave cylinder at the same time while I am at it. I know if one went the other is not far behind. I know the fluid is old in it and also my brake system, it is on my list of "To Do List" to change the brake and clutch fluid, just have not gotten to it yet. I guess now I will.

Brian

temp fix

Change the fluid via the turkey baster method.
Spray silicone under the boots and work the clutch.
this sometimes works but you will have to rebiuld the cyls eventually anyhow.

Rebuild kits are commonly avail. try our host, then local chain auto parts stores. it is the same kit for more than just porsche but just telling them you want it for a porsche will bump the price.

pelican has a slave rebuild kit.. might be worth calling them to see if they have a master kit.

I'd be interested in knowing too.

I replaced, as a matter of prevetative maintenace, the rubber seals in both the master and slave clutch cylinders.
I was not able to purchase a Porsche overhaul kit in my town and went to some local brake and clutch dealers. I dicovered that one cylinder is that same as is used on a Mercedes Benz vehicle from the 80's and the other is the same as was fitted to a Volvo from the 80's. I was able to obtain both overhaul kits for less than $10.
These cylinders are made from cast iron or steel and can start pitting if moisture gets into the fluid. It is best to replace them with new ones, or th resleave with stainless steel. I am not sure if resleeving is permitted in your country.
Some brake and clutch suppliers (in SA) even sell loose rubber seals. You can actually mix and match them to your old seals.

If the bores are still in good shape, rebuilding works great, and is a lot cheaper than new ones.

Pelican has the slave kit. The master kit is kind of hard to find, even the local Porsche dealer didn't have one listed in their parts catalog. My master seals went bad a couple months ago and I found a seal kit at NAPA. They had to order it for me, though. My clutch has been nice and solid ever since. Just make sure you use steel wool, or something else mildly abrasive, to clean the junk off the bore/piston and smooth it out, or it might leak again.

I could not find a master cylinder rebuild kit but found a slave cylinder rebuild kit so I ordered a new master and a rebuild for the slave. I have not got them off the car yet but hope the slave is not pitted. If so I will just buy a new one. Heck I have a fortune in this car anyhow what is another 89.00. What was going to be just make car to play with has truned into rebuilding almost the whole car. It has been fun though, I have learned a lot, but boy it has cost a lot. On the good side I know most things are not going to break for a while. I do have a pop in the right rear on take off, I wonder if that is the axle CV joint or is this the wheel bearing? The axle shaft seems good and tight, no play in that side, but the drivers side has a little but is not making noise. If it is the wheel bearings I will replace both sides, if one went bad the other cannot be far behind. How hard is it to replace the rear bearings?

bearings are a snap... couple hours, and you're good to go.

Rudidelang: Can you specify model and year for countermatch?

I think it was a Volvo 144 (square looking vehicle), I now realise the Volvo ceased production in the mid to late 70. The Benz was the 123 series. The 123 series were fitted with a 2, a 2.3 and a 2.8 litre engine in SA. The 123 series started in the late 70's and carried on until the late 80's.
I removed the said cylinders, took then to the brake an clutch dealer who matched them to pictures in a catalogue. I recalled that there were other vehicles that also used the cylinders or at least one on them (cant recall).
I seemed to recall that there were numbers cast on the cylinders and that they could have been ATE cylinders.
