87 944 that has been sitting
I have been lucky enough to get an 87 944S from a co-worker for short money, but it has been sitting for 3 years. I checked all fluids, took out the DME relay, got oil pressure, replaced relay, put in a new battery and it turns over. It does not seem to be getting gas. The tank likely needs to be drained and fuel filter changed. Filter has a metal hose to the tank and does not appear to be able to be clamped.
Any information on changing that filter without getting a gas bath would be helpful. I can then check if it is getting fuel by taking the cap off the fuel rail but it seems pretty stuck. If anyone has gone through this and had sucess in getting a good old car running, it would be helpful. Thanks, JD |

Try the hose between the tank and the fuel pump.
There is a filter at the bottom of the fuel tank that should be removed and cleaned. Might need to have a new gasket for it. I would have done this BEFORE ever thinking about starting it. However most likely the fuel filter has caught all of the trash IF the fuel pump is not all gummed up from sitting (most likely). Most 944's that sit (includes the 'S') must have the entire fuel system flushed. The injectors may be as gummed as the fuel pump and need cleaning or even replacement. You also need to pull the valve cover and check that the cross over chain and it's plastic pressure pad is intact and not worn out. If the plastic pad is the only thing worn out (no missing teeth on the cam gears) then replace it. Also replace the timing and the balance belts. A broken pad or chain or timing belt will set you back at least $3,000 IF you can find a head for the 'S'.

Welcome!
You really ought to heed the advice from SoCal on this - I'd say T belt and chain tensioner service before you even turn the car over. S's are great but you do have to be extra careful with the head, and there's alot of valves to bend.
