what to look out for in purchasing my first 87' 944...?

hey guys,

i have been very impressed with this forum and was wondering if you might extend some help to a first time 944 purchaser by letting me know of problem areas that i should look for in buying a 1987 944 with a manual tranny.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

J.

Start with the basics. Records. Having them is good. General maintenance. Does everything work. These cars are expensive to repair. Value is based on what needs fixing. In need of the belt service, take off a 1000 if needed. Do a compression test (170 to 190 and even). Leak down is better <4%. Oil and fuel leaks.

to add to whats been said, 87' is a very prone year to oil cooler seals failing. If this occurs oil and coolant will mix together and destroy the bearings in the engine and also clog the cooling system with engine oil. Be sure to check for a milkshake consitancy in the oil. It will be a light brown milky color (colour). Also, in the coolant resivor there will be the same thing. Or there might just be some oilly deposits on the cap and it will be slightly discolored brownish.

Belts are very important. Make sure they were changed and done regularly. They need to be replaced every 30,000 miles or every 3 years which ever comes first. Water pump is a biggie as well as all rollers and balance shaft belts. These cars are prone to power steering pump leaks so check that too. In most cases its a line to the resivor... these cars use Automatic Tranny fluid for power steering NOT power steering fluid.

There are plenty more tips and guides at the 944 FAQ page. I don't have a link handy so just google 'Porsche 944 FAQ" there is a whole bunch of things to check for.

Also, Clarks-Garage.com has a plethora of info and repair on these cars. If you do the work yourself it will save you thousands. There are many nice people here who are willing to help even further, just ask.

And please, for sanity sake, don't ask how to Turbo an NA... just buy a Turbo...

I hope this helps.

Good luck on the purchase!!!
