Any tips on replacing a late model ignition switch?
Thanks for any help! |

That will help if you don't already have it. :) |
Sorry, that looks like an early model.

Thanks John!

I have read some posts where the people say they took the whole dash out to reach one screw.
|
There are 2 screws that are designed to have the "head" break off after install so no sockets can be used to remove them. Its for security reasons but makes it next to impossible to remove without removing the dash and drilling them out. What part of the ignition switch do you have to remove? The mechanical portion where the key goes in or the electrical portion on the other side of the assembly? There are tricks to remove the tumbler assembly by drilling a small hole and depressing the retaining clip inside the lock to remove it.

I replaced the electrical switch at the back of the ignition barrel on my s2cab last month.
First off i tried to access it from underneath the dash drivers side footwell but it was damn near impossible for me so i ended up removing the steering wheel, plastic dash surround and the speedo clocks etc to access it. There's two small screws that secure it from the rear and the one nearest the steering column was the most awkward as it was difficult to get to as it's quite close to the column. It has made a difference as i can now feel the "clicks" when the keys turned. It was also a good opportunity to replace the bulbs at the back of the clocks. |
I think you are refering to the phillips screw holding the electrical portion. I am not sure whether he is talking about the mechanical portion (pretty difficult), the tumbler assembly (difficult unless you know the drill hole trick), or the electrical part behind the lock.

Thanks for the help guys! I installed the electrical portion, and it appears as though it had been done before, as there were screws there.
Thanks! |
Any DIY for late, electrical portion?
|
Yes, tear everything apart around the steering wheel, then use a combination of an offset Phillips head screwdriver and a small / jeweller's screwdriver to remove the two screws.
A mirror also helps. Good luck, Keith |

If you mean just the plastic surround around the collar of the steering 'shaft', that's better. Clarify? |
You can't get those plastic side pieces off without doing all of the other items you mentioned.... unless the mounts that are screwed in place on both are broken.

What's the "trick" to drilling the hole to remove the tumbler? i need to do this

I had some issues with my ignition switch on my 924S, so i installed this.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332034395.jpg the right switch is main power and is one of those cool missile switches. The left one is a non latch switch for the starter. The car is still safe because you need the key to disengage the steering wheel lock. It was a fun project and took maybe 2 hours. The car was not in very good shape and I have more fun doing things like that to it than keeping it stock I keep 944 and 911 100% stock so the 924S is a fun project car. Regards Dave |
