My project car is a '97 944 normally aspirated with 203k miles and one engine rebuild. I'm trying to bring it around as a daily driver. I am getting a weak buzz or ring when the keys are in the ignition and the door is open. I have traced this to the relay in the fuse/relay box which is marked "catalyst"; I also have a master caution "!" on the instrument panel. The car seems to idle OK and I have driven it a bit around the neighborhood; seems to be "OK" whether the relay is installed or removed. Is this just warning me about the O2 sensor? or something else? I'd like to have this working "properly" rather than just ignoring it. Any suggestions or experience to share?

I am not quite sure what it does other than annoy people. I removed mine to keep it from dinging. The warning light needs attention though. Check for other lights on the dash. it could be e-brake, oil level, oil pressure, voltage or temp. Maybe others but thats all that i can think of right now. how are the rest of the gauges reading?

Other gages: mostly fine
The prior owner told me the speedometer was not working; it appears to work on a trip up the street and back. All else gage-wise except the temperature appear to be fine.
I do not know the state of the other insturment warning lights though. I don't have the owner's manual but am expecting to see more warning lights when I first turn the key in the ignition (bulb check). I will have to check the parking brake switch function. The "overheat" indication seems to be a gage problem. At about 4 minutes of idling after cold start the temperature needle snaps to full reading (zero to pegged). The sending unit has the right resistance in a cup of hot water and on the engine the reisstance across its terminals reads about right (I don't have my notes right here) with the engine idling. I am expecting to pull the insturment cluster and go through it for bulb condition as my next step; other posts reference cleaning "grounds" to clear up some flakey gage behaviour.
