Not sure how common it is, I can't help much there. but if you do a search for "cams" or something like that on this forum I had a pretty good post that included alot of cam related info and one company in particular that would do regrinds at a very reasonable price.

Well, the bad news is that sucks. The good news is that, unless the cams are from the late '77 or later - they suck anyway. Good time to upgrade, even if only to the stock later cam (more lift) - you have the emissions cam. Check the cast numbers on the butt end by the distributor gear; the later cam has a number starting with 046, whereas the early cam you don't really want starts with 047.

Cheapest would be to get a used cam from someone on the 924 board:

Oh, forgot to add... check the lifters, make sure they have no pitting or chipping, replace any that do. Again, get used - new are very expensive, like $40 ea.

The reason for bad cam wear - the cam oiler tube that sits above the cam has a plastic elbow at the #1 bearing that must be replaced every time its removed. It's real cheap, like $4 or so; usually cracks and leaks oil pressure causing cam and lifter damage - not to mention low oil pressure! If Pelican doesn't sell them, I got my last bag of them from EBS Racing. If I'm not horribly mistaken, the part # is 052 115 707. Name is "cam oiler tube elbow."

You'll also need to remove the distributor and distributor drive housing to get the cam out with the head on; a PITA, but doable. Naturally, you'll want a new gasket for this as well as the cam cover. RTV the cam cover end rubber seals in place to the head.

Yep, common problem. I may have a spare cam or two, if I remember I'll look tomorrow. If I have one you can just have it for the cost of shipping.
