Considering a new start
Hello all,
I come to you all today for guidance. I just came inside from a frustrating and depressing 4 hours of working on porsches, and came to the irrational conclusion that i should sell all and start over again. I am truly depressed at this point, as i am on the verge of tears. I came to the realization today that i have no money, a job that is failing me drastically by constantly cutting my hours, because they have no money, and three porsches in my driveway, none of which are within 1500 dollars of roadworthy. I really need something from my fellow porsche owners here...what should i do? In less than a month i'll be going away to pennsylvania, to school, and i can't take my cars with me, so they are just going to sit, for close to 9 months, with me rarely being there to take care of them. I know no one in the area that owns a 944, or a porsche at that matter, so i have no one to help me with the work i need done on these cars. I'm feeling really lost right now, and i'm desperate for someone to help me through this. On that note, is there anyone around here that could give these beautiful pieces of machinery a home? Or are they going to rot away with the rest of my hopes and dreams? Thank you for reading this if you have, Ethan |
i'd sell one of the 944s and use the money to get the other one up and running - store the 924 until you can get to it

Go to school!! That is your focus. It's your ticket to success and earning power. The car(s) can wait.
I think you are brave just to express your feelings. But remember: even warriors going to battle were anxious, scared and afraid. It is what got them thru the battle. My advice: Prioritize your cars. Make a list and cost of what it will take to get them to meet your expectations. Above all: Patience. Rome wasn't built in a day, The cars are old and they aren't going anywhere. The question is: where are u going?? Look: I admire you . You have 3 cars, got a job and a student. I had a $100 1964 Chevy. So it's ok to feel overwhelmed, sad, scared. Don't let it get to you. Make a plan; a realistic one and work toward it. I am successful, but am rebuilding an 83 Porsche. I'm the original owner. I started in Oct 06 and probably will finish in Oct 07. I'm a father and husband; the car, I love dearly, the car always comes second. But it will get done. Good luck. Go to School!!! Do I sound like a dad?? |
You might search out a highschool that is in need of a vehicle for one of their technical classes. Take them all 3 and see if they can put one good one together out of the whole lot. Sorry to hear of the difficulties, hang in there!SmileWavy

thanks jim, that's the kind of rationalization i needed. The high school idea is a good one, but i wouldn't know where to start, lol.

Ethan,
I hear you, brother. While I'm older than you and gainfully employed, I've also got three old Porsches and all of them have issues. The 914-6 won't even start, fer pity's sake! I frequently get depressed just lookin' at 'em and thinking about everything that needs to be done. Your first priority has to be school. You can't let car issues get in the way of that. It's not bad if you keep all three under cover/tarp, but it might depress you to think about it and there may be another way. As others have suggested, assess and prioritize the cars. Which one is closest to being a usable vehicle? Can the parts it needs be taken from the other two cars you have? Is there one you're more attached or attracted to than the others? I must admit, if two of the three are in bad shape, I'd part them out for cash to get the third car running. Unless the tree/hurricane damage is bad, I'd probably lean towards the 924S because of the later spec motor and '87+ suspension bits. From what I remember it's basically the base model 944 w/o flares, plus the older interior. Whatever you decide to do in the end, hope this helped you cdllect your thoughts. --Steve. |
Yeah, money is no fun. I'm married with two kids, I have the 944 a truck with a cracked block and a jeep with a bad tranny. I didn't have any job except a hit and miss one until last week and my wife just graduated college. Times can be rough but it'll be OK. One big peice of advice not about cars is set your sights where you want to go, find out how to get there the most effective way and stick to it! I pissed around with school for 5-6yrs now and I'm still not done. I want to be a pharmacist, but there are faster ways I could have done it, I just didn't have a good focus going in. Money is always and issue, so when selecting a profession look at a thing called the "occupational outlook handbook" it's available online through the govornment for free. It will describe the job a little, it's projected growth and average pay. It'll help you peg down what will work best for you. Good luck with school and the Porsches. I'd see if I could take the parts from all the cars and put it together to make one functional one, then part out the other two and you'd have darn near to $0 net when you are done. Again, Good luck.

Ethan,
Any time you want to talk: PM me. Don't let the car(s) overwhelm you. You can include girls, or the chance for easy big money. All in due time. |
Listen everyone here. School is most important. Even if you have to part with these for now a few years down the road when you're finished with school and have a steady job there will still be other cars out there.

Didn't post earlier because I wanted your friends here to chime in first.
Don't stress and don't sell anything impulsively. Now you've had a few days to calm down over this--I hope--your situation is more clear. I like the idea of combining your resources to get a ride running. If you have the time between packing (FOR SCHOOL) you might tell us what needs fixing on what. It sounds like Royal Red Pain In The Ass could be looted and get Smokey up and running, but it'd take more time than you have before you leave (FOR SCHOOL). Last: Take pics, get them blown up to poster size, and spread them all around your dorm room walls:D |
Where in Pennsylvania are you going to school? Just curious.
|
School ...man..... School
the cars can wait It will pay off for you down the road :) |
Thanks so much for your help guys. I feel a lot better now, and i'm lucky i didn't do anything insane. I'm thinking of getting the 924S going, that's really the one that i like the most, the damage in the rear is repairable, and the only other thing it really needs is an oil pump and some fuel system problems. Smokey has an engine oil leak, transmission leak, rust, bad electrical system, and a blown transaxle/differential (the terrifying slam in the right rear corner when you turn left). Honestly i think i can get the most out of the 924S, even though it has the most miles (by only 20,000 miles, but still)
BTW, i'm going to school just outside of Philly, in a little town called Bryn Athyn. Thanks again guys! Ethan |
1: School. No contest.
2: Don't sell. 3: Take the parts cars apart on your own time - there won't be a time crunch and disassembly teaches you about reassembly. 4: Build a car out of what you have - with the funds you're earning from sticking to #1 above. Wish I lived anywhere near Maryland (or could afford a plane ticket). I love this kind of thing. Good luck, and nil carborundum! |
thanks once again slam
