Body work (Blown944)

I am wanting to alleviate my eyes of the black bumper pads on my car and I was curiouse if anyone could tell me how to go about this. On the rear it helps to support the little side plastic bumper cover thing. How do I remedy this. What did you do Sid? Also any tips on the front? Thanks guys.

If you remove the pads you will get a few holes and a few stubs sticking out. Grind the stubs flat and you will need to fill the holes. Either find someone with a TIG welder (to weld aluminum) or you can fill the holes with something like JBWeld.

This should give you an idea as to what is done involving the side covers..

cost effective is pretty important...but i like what you did with yours kyle....bye the way, have you seen my keys?

techno, looks very nice, that's what i'm shooting for. What did you use to fill the plastic and also what did you do to attach the plastic side thing to the bumper? did you jb weld a bolt/stud in there?

Thanks for the help guys.

I thought about removing the pads and experimented a little with filling the holes. I used JBWeld on a spare bumper and a body filler to smooth everything out. I did not get as far as figuring out what to do with the end caps. I scrapped the idea and got a euro bumper instead . Using JBWeld to repair anything usually gets people a little antsy with it being ghetto, but it came out quiet nicely actually.

you could also use *gasp* bondo...
it comes with a little wire mesh... silicon the mesh to the inside of the bumper (just enough to cover a little more than the hole), then apply the bondo from the outside... sand and paint.

I actually did this when I fit my euro bumper... I filled the license plate holes with bondo, and it looked great after I painted it.. but I drilled out the holes again because I wasn't gutsy enough to run without a front plate (it's the law up here!)..

Brian, I need the keys to remove the back bumper.. those holes need to be filled, otherwise the car will fill up with water a LOT faster than normal.. but I dont have the keys...do you have the keys?

LOL kyle!

I haven't seen the keys, but i know it's a 911T and those were FAST...one of the fastest Porsche ever made. I think my mom has the keys, she took them from me when she caught me trying to figure out how to pop the "trunk" so I could look at the engine. I wanted to see what a 1 cylinder engine looked like. You see it's a 1 cylinder because that's how they named the engines, you know, 924 has four cylinders, 911 has one...anyhow, i'd take you for a spin but I don't have the keys.

Dang! that's sad I remember so much from that video clip, I haven't watched it since our last bout!

...I think my post just got a little dumber

I think Technos idea of welding is a little better, you wouldnt want to loose the water tightness of the 944 if you drive it underwater.

Part of the law that we (Ralph Nader if I'm not mistaken) instituited in the 70's or so. It's something like a 15mph impact law. Again, if I'm not mistaken we have to have small elastomer/shock absorbers behind the bumper so when we hit something it softens the impact. Again, I'm no expert on this because I really could care less EXCEPT they look butt ugly.

I used bondo on mine and it turned out great. If you can get Evercoat, not the cheap autozone stuff.

I welded the bumper and plastic welded the end pieces. I used some old plastic parts after cleaning them in the washer (dishwasher late at night, don't tell my wife ) When you do the plastic try to leave some extra plastic sticking into the bolt holes to hold it in place. It will stay w/o it but it looks better and doesn't move as much.

If you don't want to weld the bumper there is a product that is like a filler with metal in it I have used it in the past with very good results I think it was called "real metal" or something like that.

The front I have a whole new setup on now (not completely finished) but I would have done the same.

I think the pads are sweet. Gives my 924s more personality; makes it exotic...

Just to clarify, the car pictured is not mine. It has the widebody fenders aswell as the Lemans rear spoiler painted red.

Thanks

I am going to do a very similiar thing to my 51 but with a small strip of black trim runnning across the bumper and side trim pieces. Also the lights are red already instead of amber. I think I'll keep my back in glass too

That is a very cool looking ride

Cool indeed! Well thanks ya'll for helpin me figure out what to do w/ the bumper pads. I'll probobly work on that some next week or the following weekend. When ever I get around to it i'll post some pics. I doubt I'll get any good paint for now though. My body needs alot more than paint LOL!
