What the Hell

My 84 944 will still not start. After isolating the problem to fuel (the sparks plug do spark), i changed the fuel pump relay, the fuse, put in a new fuel filter, and finally put in a new fuel pump. I tried to start it up and it still just cranks. I dont know what else i could do.

did you test for fuel pressure at the rail?

You may have a plugged line or the fuel intake strainer is clogged.

I'd have to also say check for pressure to the rail, that will help to narrow things down a little.

Look at the check valve inline to the pump. Check for vacuum leaks.

Um,

I assume the fuel pump runs when DME relay is jumpered?

You may have checked this already but I can't see where you say the fuel pump is definitely operating, so check you have some volts at the FP.

Mine recently somehow unhooked the FP supply lead from a retaining strap high in the wheelarch, the cable rested on the halfshaft for a while until it wore through and there was no connection. I doubt this is your problem as I expect the car has been working and didn't just die on the road like mine.

cheers
Russell.

I'm positive that the fuel pump works because while cranking i had my brother stand by the pump and listen for it. You could clearly hear it working.

Pull an injector (if you can) and see if anything comes out when cranking (put the end in a jar to avoid making a mess or worse)

I took out the pipe that leads away from the new fuel pump and tried starting to see if it spit gas. It made noise and you could feel it working but it didnt spit any gas. Is it possible that the Positive and negative wires are on incorrectly? I was afraid to change them and try in case it blew out my new pump.

I don't think it would hurt it to run backwards but if you didn't take the plug apart it shoud be ok, I don't know the 944s as well as others but most have 2 pumps, (1 intank and 1 out side). one is for pressure and the other for volume. If they are like a 968 there should be an access hole on the right side of the rear under the carpet to get at the intank pump, give that one a look.

There's a fuel strainer in the bottom of the tank. It may be plugged with debris.

It's also possible your pump may be wired in reverse as well. You may want to try that first since no fuel at all is coming out.

edit: 944's only have 1 fuel pump btw.

Car started perfect three times in a row. Thanks to everyone who helped. I'm such an idiot the wires for the fuel pump were reversed and once i switched the baby fired up every time. Once again thanks for the help.
