My 924 has the alternator light on with the key off. Where to start?

I hope it's this simple...
With the key off and alternator light on, do you also have battery voltage at the black wire to the coil? If you do, you probably have a bad ignition switch. The voltage for the idiot lights and coil on a '77 924 ONLY comes from the ignition switch ON position. I looked at a '78 924 schematic. Should be the same.

Check you wires that go to the starter... it happened on my 911. It was a broken connector.

Found it. Brittle insulation around the harness connecting the starter and alternator had flaked off causing a dead short. Too many heat shields to get around, but its out and now I have to rebuild that portion of the harness.
