Timing Marks

I had to replace some lifters on my 84 na. I've already bought the annthorx timing kit. the problem is i'm confused at where to set the cam compared to the cam tower when i put it on. I have my engine at tdc and it says to set it back one and a halft teeth to time it, but do i set the cam back then put it on the motor or do i line up the cam and cam tower marks and then set it back after its already bolted down?
thanks for the help!

Have the #1 piston at TDC and the flywheel mark aligned at the bell housing.
Get the cam close before bolting it down so you don't have to spin it too much after its bolted down, then you can move it a little after it bolted down to align the marks , if in doubt don't start it till you are sure. After aligning the marks put the belt in place and torque the tensioner bolt, spin the motor 2 times by hand and make sure the marks align and recheck the belt tension before starting.

First get it like this pic, then in order to move the belt's slack to the upper belt span, rotate the crank backward (CCW as you're facing the engine) until the those two red arrows are out of alignment by approx 1.5 teeth. The 1.5 teeth is not the critical part, getting the slack to the upper span is whats most important. If you put your finger on the upper span as you rotate the crank backward, you'll feel slack in the belt. That means you're ready to make a krikit measuerment....Bruce
