So b/c it is getting colder i decided to check my antifreeze. I open the cap only to find a whitish gray goo on the cap and in the tank. I took some antifreeze out of the tank with a turkey baster and found that it had oil it...perfect way to ruin a Sunday btw.
Question does any one know what could be causing this and how hard is it to fix? Also i checked the oil and it is clear. The car had had bent valves repaired at Storks in Dallas shortly before i bought it and that was only like 2-3k miles ago. i will post a pic of the antifreeze once i get back out there with a camera. any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Oil cooler seals. Easy fix for one afternoon or morning. Remember to flush after fixing

It's one of two things: bad oil cooler seals, or a blown head gasket. Pray for the former.
Check your oil on the dipstick. Does it look normal, or is it "milk shakey"? If it's milk shake, you have a bad head gasket almost 100% of the time. This is comparatively big bucks. If it isn't, it's proably just oil cooler seals, which is common, comparatively inexpensive, and easy on NA 944s.

My $$ is on the oil cooler seals. It's not too bad of a job, but I recommend getting ahold of the alignment tool to install them!
Good luck! -Nick

++ on the alignment tool. Makes it MUCH easier to put back together correctly

it could also be the head gasket.
an easy way to check is to use an emissions 'sniffer' (any emissions or dyno shop should have one) on the coolant reservoir with the cap open and the motor running. if the head gasket is blown, it will pick up faint exhaust emissions readings from the coolant.

Also try a leak down test & listen for air escaping Testing the coolant resevoir for hydrocarbons could give you a false reading with oil (hydrocarbon) in it.

aren't hydrocarbons only formed from combustion?

Wouldnt there be water in the oil if the head gastket was blown?

it is also possible for the hg to be blown in such a way that oil only leaks into the coolant during combustion one-way. it's happened to me before.

k...i already have the seals for the oil cooler on the way and will change them on sat. the flush the system. Do i need to change the oil while i have it all apart? i just did it less than 1,000 miles ago. If its not the oil cooler guess i get to learn how to do a headgasket

Could it be a leak from the water pump?

When you do the oil cooler seals, try to take the exhaust manifolds off. It is a truly horrible experience with them on.

no. there is no chance for passage between coolant/oil in the water pump.

no. hydrocarbons are what you car burns (and your body in the form of glucose). hydrocarbons are carbon/hydrogen chain molecules. thus, true octane is a chain of 8 carbon atoms with 17 (i think) hydrogen atoms attached.
combustion byproducts are H20, C0 (due to insufficient O2 in the mixture) and CO2.
