180 MPH Speedometer
Does anyone know if the 180 MPH speedometer from a 968 is the same speedo for the 1989 944 Turbo?
|
According to PET the 968 uses part numbers 944 641 951 27 for the standard model and 944 641 951 23 for the Tiptronic model throughout the years of manufacture (only GB part numbers are listed in MPH so I'm guessing they are the same for America - all the others for South Africa etc. were in 300 KPH)
The 1989 Turbo uses part number 944 641 951 14 for the 180 MPH speedo. The wheels on the 1989 cars - according to PET were either 15 or 16 inch - a lot of 16 inch wheels are listed but only one 15 inch is listed. I'm guessing the Turbo used 16 inch wheels. The 968 used either 16 inch or 17 inch wheels. This might account for the slight variation in speedo part numbers - due to the calibration. Otherwise the diagrams look identical. The earlier cars used 16 inch wheels. If you get a speedo from a car of a known wheel size matching your own car I bet they would be interchangeable. None of the above part numbers are listed as having a speed warning device. I doubt if an inch difference in wheel size would be too problematical either - not when you consider that you could probably just as easily affect the calibration to a greater or lesser degree simply by fitting tyres of a different profile to standard. It'd be different if your car has 15 inch wheels and you fitted a speedo intended for a 17 inch wheeled car. Of course, I'm just guessing. The part number difference might just be down to the different colour of the dial faces! |
Hummmmm, I take it you plan on doing 180? ;)

No, but I wish. :D My odometer stopped working and it turned out to be the common broken gear. When I tried to remove the speedo needle to get to the gear, I pried (foolishly with a screwdriver) on the bottom of what I thought was the needle. It turned out the it was not the needle but the needle seat on the speedo shaft. I ended up extending the shaft a bit and really screwed-up the speedo mechanism. After screwing up my speedo, I easily pulled the needle of with my fingers. So there is a lesson here. Don't pry underneath the needle really close to the shaft, chances are you will be prying on the needle seat instead of the needle. I learned an expensive lesson. I have a second hand speedo on the way from 944ecology but I was just curious if the 968 speedo would work.
