951 purchase help needed
I am looking at purchasing a 951 and wanted to run some things by you guys for some thoughts.
1986 951 $10,000 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() New belts/rollers/water pump/front seals 2 months ago New rack and tie rods New plugs/wires/cap&rotor/filters New motor mounts New speakers Vaccuum lines replaced and updated New brakes 115,000 miles. Car was garaged and not driven for 10 years (Says owner). Which is not necissarily a good thing. The owner is a mechanic and has done a pretty good ammount of recent service...he uses it as a daily driver now. Is there anything I should be looking at with a car that sat garaged for 10 years? This was in the past....it has been regularly driven as of recently. Also as you can see from the photos above, two of the 16" phonedials are bent up from hitting a curb....They look like they got whacked pretty hard....Should I be concerned about this? Could a hit this hard bend the frame/axles....anything like that? The owner has 17" turbo twist replicas on order and new michelin tires. He will sell the car with or without the rims/tires but wants $2000 for the set. The car is 10,000 without new rims/tires. Interior and exterior are described as being in excellent condition. I have not seen this car in person. I wanted to get some feedback before I went any further with this. So what do you think? Seller is not very motivated so I don't think I can bargain down too far on this one...may $1000 less or so. Thanks |

10K is too much--especially since it has been curbed so hard. I would be wary of bent suspension components up front--which is a finicky aspect of the 944-series cars to begin with.
For comparison, I sold my 86 with brand new tires, Fuchs, LSD, no dash cracks, 118K, and a slew of records for 8,000. Keep looking.

Looks like a nice, well-taken care of car - but not for $10K. I spent under $9K on mine a year ago, and it was in perfect mechanical condition, all records, perfect interior, perfect wheels, and only slight rock chips on the exterior.
![]() I'm not saying that that silver 951 isn't the car for you, just that 10K is too much (especially with a bent wheel!)

yeah, thanks guys. I was thinking the same thing....for 10k a 951 should be in top condition with all recent service done.
I would probably make this guy an offer, but he mentioned that someone else offered him 7500 and he was not even close to interested. Ok so here is another option in my area..... I emailed for more pictures but here is the craigslist ad. Black on Black Leather beauty, this 1987 944 is a Turbo with Turbo Boost and has been chipped. It has 94k original miles and new tires and recent maintenance. It runs exceptionally well and is immaculate. It comes with Pioneer sound, frontal bra, moonroof cover, waterproof car cover, manuals and records. Absolute beauty, collector's item. Has been garage kept, no rust. I will negotiate for the best offer. Please email for info and additional pictures. ![]() If anyone is selling a 951 in the bay area let me know. I may also be interested in a 968 if the right one came along. Thanks again |

It's a good thing it has "turbo boost". Not sure what the point of a Turbo would be without "turbo boost"

And then there is this one for 4 grand....but it scares me just a little bit because of the low price.
White Porsche 944 Turbo for Sale. 1987 Model. I bought the car 1989 with 21K miles. Car has 136K original miles. No accidents. Clean Title. I always cared for the car but I now have a black Carrera and no more room in the garage. Since the car was never in an accident it looks good outside. Inside, the leather seats are not in great shape. The car did not pass the smog check (I tried only once) and I did not have time to fix it yet. Drives actually better than my Porsche Carrera. Even the lowest KBB private sale price is $5,035. I am offering mine at $4,000. I want to find a good buyer who will enjoy and appreciate the car. ![]()

I would never sell mine for less than $10 K, (Canadian)
Fantastic car, great investment. Bottom line, buy the best example of a 951 that you can afford, accept the regular maint costs and enjoy! Cheers, Dave db951_sep_04-002.jpg

Yeah 10K too much for that car, the white turbo you posted sounds nice but buyer beware for that price. When I was looking for my turbo I ran across one on CL that was around 4500, talking with the guy he kept telling me it was in great shape, he didn't take very good pics of it. Anyway it was close so I went and looked at it what a POS, coolant leak, large dents, etc anyway I said no thanks. Fortunately I found my 89 Turbo great shape, records for $8900.
BTW that white turbo, does that have a glass saratoga sunroof? If he's close enough might be worth looking at. CJ & DB nice cars! Good luck.

I'd take a look at the white one. He has another Porsche, so he might be a Porschephile that takes really good care of his cars. Or he might be in over his head.
The white one needs some work, though, so factor that into the price. Probably be around $1000 to get the interior reupholstered. My car, which I bought before last winter, had 93k on the body and 29k on the Turbo S running gear. I paid $8000. I liked the owner more than anything (three other Porsches?!?!?) and the shop that does the work on it. The body has some light scratches and rock chips up front, and a couple of small areas where somebody got too aggressive with a buffer. I'm planning on getting it resprayed maybe next winter. Either way, I think I got a good deal because of the engine/transmission/suspension, etc. I'm sure some would say I paid a bit too much.

oh boy....I found a nice 968 in town...I am going to try and take a look at it today. They want 11k for the car and the guy is selling it because he bought a 911 turbo.
1992 Porsche 968 Coupe 6-Speed Blk/Blk 85k miles - $11000 1992 Porsche 968 Coupe Black on Black 85k miles Great Condition Car has been well cared for & runs perfect. timing belt was done at 60k with the other major service. That was 4 or 5 years ago I think so timing belt is probably needed soon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was going to offer 9 cash and see what happens. I would pay the 11 probably if everything was in great condition. After timing belt would cost me around 12 or so. Would probably be a better commuter than the 951 anyways....and if I had a 951 I would probably spend a boatload of money making it go faster. plus the 951 selection in town isn't too great right now. What do you think? thanks guys, I am chomping at the bit to get a new Pcar, but I want to get the right one this time. Anything I should look out for on a 968? I could get a PPI, but I would prefer not to wait....bad idea? |

That 968 is pretty nice. Its the right colors too.
I have a 968 and a 951. IMHO, the 968 is a much better daily driver. I just picked up my 951 recently for $5300 968 ![]() 951

Well I bought the 968.....Paid 11. Then I was told you have to pay sales tax in california on a used car....That is kinda crazy. I might try to register it in oregon and not pay the tax.
I have driven her about 30 miles at this point.....she runs great. car is very very clean. couple minor dings on passenger door. drivers side electric mirror adjustment is broken....missing a small piece of trim on door panel. Accident in 1998 on carfax reported by police. Timing belt says it doesn't need to be done until 120,000 miles....Is that the case or is it just like the 944 and should be changed more frequently than reccomended? From the documentation of a recent service it looks like the power steering might be leaking. All in all very happy with the purchase so far. Similar to my 944 but faster and nicer looking. Just had a $300 detail so paint is very shiny. interior of the engine is so clean it doesn't make sense. Will get some picture up within the week. If anyone has any tips let me know....Anyone else buy a car in california and try to register it elsewhere to get out of paying the sales tax? Thanks |
