Wisconsin-trailer to borrow?

Howdy, looking to possibly buy my first 944 on Saturday 12-8 but my trailer fell through. Anyone between Janesville and Appleton got one I might rent for $$$, beer, or ? Can pick up Fri/Sat and return by Sunday. TIA if you can pass it on...

Speedy is in the area, but I don't think he owns a trailer.

He rented a flat one from Uhaul when he bought my S, IIRC.

Howdy Chris, was it a flatbed or a dolly unit he rented? (I have little faith in their-uhauls, counter people)

Date changed to 12-15/16 for possible purchase...

Howdy savage,
I did rent a U-haul car hauler. It was the kind with ramps where the whole car got to ride on board. I would recomend going this route if you kind find a trailer to rent for beer. I don't think there are alot of 944s in this area at least on Pelican so U-haul may be your best bet.

I thought the U-haul trailer was very nice. I towed nicely behind my '93 F150. The trailer has onboard hydraulic brakes so all you need to hook up is a 2" ball and the brake light wiring harness. You might want to look into the harness wiring though. I remember I had to purchase a converter to tow the trailer. Give them a call.

Check into rates as well. It was cheaper for my to rent the trailer for a "day" than "one way" even when increased fuel consumption was figured.

OH! You aren't buying the black 944S for sale in Janesville are you?
It is the only 944 I know of in the area. If so please let me know as I have looked at the car from the outside 2 times and I can give you some valuable feedback. Hit me up.

If you do get a 944 make sure to attend speedracing944s super great timing belts tensioning party come spring.

Speedy

Hey Speedy, I'm *really* curious about your feedback on that 944"S" here in town and the folks selling it. No, I won't buy that car. I got a good story for PMs on that one.

I tried to reserve one of the U-Haul trailers one way from the pick up point but the online deal will only let me rent it for a 2 day rate-$110!? Bizzare. I'll definitely be over for the belt party. Look forward to it.

"story"?? Please let us all in on it!

Yes, one way is always two day.. I always assumed it was to make up for the inventory relocation and to discourage people from leaving them with a pile of trailers in one place, but $110!! Ouch!!

Here is my take on the black 944 for sale in Janesville. Now keep in mind I nave not contacted the owners and havn't had a look at the engine but here are my observations...
1) the paint is complete crap. It looks as if it was spray painted with rattle can bought from Wal-mart.
2) interior is very well used
most importantly the car is being advertised as a '87 944S. When I did a walk around the car I noticed no 'S' badging on the rear of the car. There was only the regular 944 emblem. Hmmmm that sparked my attention. So I go over to the drivers side DARK tinted window and take a peak inside the compartment. I look at the tack to see where the redline was marked at. On a normal 944 redline is 6400 RPM but on the 'S' it should be 6800 RPM. On this particular car it had a 6400 RPM tack.

Granted, the owner may of swapped out the instrument cluster and removed the rear 944S badge and the car may be a bonefied 'S' but I doubt it. I guess I could get the VIN and check it but given the condition of the car even if it was an 'S' as advertised would steer me away.

I once was at the 944fest put on by Rennlist and there was an old fella there with his wife who was showing off their 944S. I looked under the hood and there was just a plain Jane 8 valve motor in there. I made mention of it to the guy and his comment was he just bought the car and it was an 'S' because the PO said it was. I felt bad for the guy.

Bottom line is I would hate for somebody to get screwed on a deal like this.

It's not an S-it has just an 8V motor in it. I got the cock and bull story that..." the air cleaner was from a Turbo, the motor was a 16V S, and NO the empty coolant resevoir did NOT mean the head gasket was blown..", and NO the current owner had no idea about where the coolant went or why the front and rear undercarriage of the car was coated with oil. There are THREE sellers to deal with; the father, daughter, and son-in-law, and none of them answers their cell phones or returns calls in a timely fashion. ( I'd say a 72 hour window is a timely fashion. Never happened.) No, there was not a "Turbo" air cleaner on the car.

My intuition from seeing the title is that these folks have friends with a dealer's license, pick these up at auction, and sell 'em off the front lawn. In my 26 years of buying and selling motorcycles and cars I have never had such a weird experience as that one, with those folks.

U-Haul it is, I guess.

Maybe I should make an appointment to go look at the car and let them know how full of crap they are.

I can't wait to tell your story to my wife. Both of us laughed so hard the last time we looked at it.

Good luck on your car transaction and trailering. It will be good to have another Pelican in the area.

Well, while visiting our friends in Chillicothe, for the Peoria TT bashes, we'll have to get together. A small p-car gathering. Maybe sooner.
