Manual Tranny Pinion Bearing

As I mentioned several months ago, I have a clunking when I push the gas and then let it off, I had my someone test drive it and the think its the pinion bearing... also when you go over a hill and let off the gas while in gear, and let it hold back, it makes a kinda whine sound from the tranny... I was told the ring and pinion gears were trying to "pass" each other, is there a way I can put new bearings in it myself?... is there a way I can check the bearings myself?.. an access plate maybe?

Clunking? No. Could be CVs.
Whining, yes pinion and ring gear bearings.

To change the carrier bearings, easy. Drop the tranny.
To change pinion bearings, not a home diy. Need tools, tools, special tools.

Find a used low mileage tranny, best option.

If the "clunk" is when going on and off the power, the first thing to look for is the clutch rubber center. Remove the rubber plug at the trans front housing, set trans in neutral, grasp the torque tube and try to rotate it.
If it does you need a need a new clutch. If it doesn't look at the trans and cv joints.

i didn't realize the torque tube itself would rotate. i thought it was anchored at the bellhousing and the transaxle.

In my situation it's definately in the transmission. I'm pulling it out to replace the clutch here in the next week. I think driving it so long with the clutch rubber jacked up, put unnecessary stress on the pinion bearing. The constant clunking from on gas to off. My CVs are fine. What I hear is the whine of a bearing. Sounds like a dump truck if you know what I mean.

Nynor:

The torque tube driveshaft rotates, the outer tube doesn't.

if you drove the 944 with a broken rubber center, that may only be the noise, as the metal tabs in the clutch try and go over each other.

I think he meant the driveshaft inside the TT.
