Advice needed - clutch master cylinder rod

Saturday was a nice day - no rain and the roads had not been salted in a long time. So I wanted to take the 944S out for a quick drive to keep it from sitting all winter.

One thing on my list to adjust was the clutch pedal. The engagement was really high, i.e. the clutch didn't come in till the top of the pedal travel. I wormed myself under the dash with much effort and loosened the lock nut and spun the cylinder rod, tightened the lock nut down again. Went out for a drive. Seemed to help the clutch pedal engage but still not good enough.

When I got back to the garage, I figured I'd try for a little more adjustment. Bad idea. Seems I went to far and actually unscrewed the rod from the rectangular threaded block attached to the clutch pedal.

Now, given the hydraulic pressure in the master cylinder, I am unable to get the rod back into the threaded block on the pedal. I.e. now there is no room to line them up.

Seems like I should be able to have a second person open a bleeder or something on the cylinder for a brief second while I push on the rod to get some room to thread it back in. Will that work? Any other ideas? Do I have to drain and bleed the whole system?

Pull the rod end off of the pedal and screw it back together.
Sounds like you have air in the system. When you say top of travel, do you mean down to the floor, or all the way back toward you?

The clutch engages at the top of pedal range, closest to the position the pedal would take if you applied no pressure. That's what I was trying to adjust using the method in Haynes and also described in a post or two here. Should be no air in the system though it is certainly possible.

I can pull the rod out of the boot, screw it in to the block attached to the pedal, but the then I couldn't get it back into the boot. Tried that - not enough room.

yes, your proposed method will work

the adjustment procedure you are referring to is to adjust free play ( how much play or gap there is before the clutch starts to release when the pedal is depressed), adjust it to the specs in the manual, and while under the car, or while the friend is there have him measure the clutch lining
