Starting problem Found- Check out this Pic!!!

Wanted to share this with everyone reguarding my starting issues!. I ahve had the hard start from the start. Then got bad the last few days, thought it was the DME Temp sensor, NOT, then possibly the battery NOT, then the starter, NOT, cables NOT! Did a little more digging found that I had a delayed spark at time of ignition. Either the coil or the rotor! Have never had a problem with missing, rough, timing etc with the motor! Poped the cap and you see below! Got a new one at the local parts store, installed, put cap back on fired right up! Had to shut down, my dad said the cap had a vibration, took it off and the rotor wa hitting the cap HARD, got to looking and the gasket was only about 1/4 there! All I can say is I am glad I am learning and that I can work on my own stuff! Just wanted to pass this on everyone I talked to today said the car should not have been running, and it hhad been lik that for a long time! The build up inside of the cap was a BUNCH!

That has to be the worst I've ever seen. I'm amazed it started at all. Good find.

Wanted to add the side shot as well! It had a small piece of the brass on it, I guess that was helping it to light off? Been like that for a long time!

got every las bit of life out of that rotor

Gasket? Tell us why the new rotor was hitting. Old rotor looks like it machined itself to fit when something didn't set up right. Amazing that it still ran.

Crispy!

Yah, it was a tight fit between the Old rotor and old cap. Goat a new cap coming in today, hopefully that will solve the main problem.

Good you posted this. Most of the time, people here assume you know basic auto mechanics and things like that are usually cared for on a regular basis.

You're well on your way to THE DARK SIDE. After you know the basics, you start the MODS.

Looks to me as if the car not been serviced in donkeys years

seen them broken ,but never as bad as that

looks like its been on the car since new!

If the rotor arms like that what everything else like? belts/filters etc

THe rotor and cap look to be origional! I replaced the Rotor, Cap and upgraded to an MSD Coil. Bid on some new wires on eBay and lost them at the last min! Everything seams to be doing good so far, just need to get a couple of days driving on it to really tell the dif. I guess I am going to need to start going through all the car! The guy before me had a real "Mechanic" working on it! So I will go through everything. I have a couple more issues, I think just before I got the car there were a few bandaids put on, now they are starting to fall off!
