how to adjust a 944 rear window (latches)
 

It is very difficult to open the rear window on my son's 944. Nothing seems to make it better, i.e., pushing down or up (on the window) while turning the key. Sometimes it opens and sometimes it doesn't.

Is there a procedure for adjusting these latches so they work?

BTW when the window is open the key moves the cams that (should) open the window.

I checked the adjustment on the cone that seats into the latch and it was all the way out.

If it's difficult to open the hatch....meaning it's heavy and you have to push it up, then the hatch struts are shot and need to be replaced. it should open on it's own without any help once the key is turned or the button inside is pressed.

if it's just not unlatching then the clamps are most likely rusted. You can unbolt them from the inside of the hatch. the clamps are the part where the hatch pin goes into. May take some soaking in PB blaster or wd40 overnight and to keep working them open closed to get them working.

You want the hatch pins to close the hatch as close as possible. so shorting them up once this is taken care of will help avoid leaks as well as exhaust coming in while driving down the road with the window open.

It's possible the pins are out of align due to the hatch glass starting to separate from the frame up by the hinges.
If its not too bad out of align, there are cheesehead bolts by the hatch pins that allow a little movement/alignment of the pins.

the pins are probably too tight(short) loosen the jam nut and lengthen them. the nut could be rusted and break the stud when turned.

it's trial and error, too tight, won't open, too loose, won't stay latched.

fwiw:
i've never had a any 944/na/s/turbo hatch swing up on its own when the button is pushed, key on.

with the hatch up, have someone push the button and see if the latching mechanism is releasing.

Ive only seen the hatch pop open with brand new hatch struts and it appears that effect fades out over a few months. I wouldnt bother replacing the struts unless they are completley blown and do not hold the weight of the hatch up. Many people report the glass separation becoming worse ten fold with new struts.

As mentioned, adjust the locking pins, i have seen them start to bend before. Might be a nice time to buy the stainless steel pins available at Rennbay and Paragon Products. They are pretty cheap also. My hatch used to stick at times with the electric release, but always worked with the key. Every couple months i shot some white lithium grease into the locking pin receivers.
