Tranny Problem
I just got my car back together after doing a engine rebuild. I am now having issues with 1st gear. All the other gears shift fine both up and down but when moving and trying to go down into 1st it grinds and wont go in. Going 1st to 2nd is no problem. If I engage the clutch engaged and let the trans RPM's settle a bit it will go into gear.
I just replaced the clutch so I do not believe that is the problem and apparently the trans shifted fine before my rebuild. I bought the car with a blown motor. The other problem is that there is a lot of side to side slop in the shifter. Originally I thought it was the 1st gear synchro but am now wondering if it may be something else. Any thoughts? Thanks Brian

Side to side play is most probably a worn shifter, remove the shift boot, remove the c-clip on the shifter/shift rod and slide to the side. Take a look at the "c-clip shaft" it has probably worn out. You can easily replace the shifter by removing the 2 bolts securing it to the torque tube. Check this first, though the symptoms certainly point to worn #1 synchro.

I could still be the clutch nut disengaging properly when is depressed causing sticky first gear. Try to see if pressing the clutch to the floor improves matters a bit.

If the clutch was aligned properly it should not stick as it is a new clutch, the clutch slave however could either be going bad or have air in its system. All said however the 944 rear trans layout does not make for clutch-less shifting very easy so a sticky clutch/master cylinder problem should rear its head during upshifts as well.

With it only being first gear...synchros. I also agree with the worn shifter causing the side to side movement.

I just noticed that you said when moving is difficult to put first gear. Well I have not seen any car that will be happy to do this. Saying that replacing the tranny oils with new synthetic oil usually helps the synchro with shifting gears. Also is the shifting problem when the engine is cold or is the problem more pronounced when things have warmed up?

Spent some time today messing with the shifting. I tightened up the slop in the shifter with some washers and also replaced the gear oil. Still having the 1st gear problem. To answer some of the previous questions it does have the problem when it is cold or warm. Also it only grinds when I am slowing down at a stop light and shift into first gear with the clutch pushed in. It also grinds if I am stopped at a light, press the clutch and quickly go into first gear. I am now pretty certain it is the synchro.
