Short shift kit installed

Hey guys,

Just wanted to share that I installed my short shift kit from Ebay seller 'Deutschepartsusa'. This SSK is the type that mounts on the trans, like the Schnell. The brand is Hamburg-Technic (www.hamburgtechnic.com). I paid like $70 incl. shipping.

The kit didn't fit perfect though. i had to sand down the shaft that goes in the shift rod towards the lever and also the hole that slides over the gear selector shaft. On top of that I had to drill the dimple in the shaft in the correct spot, since the original one was off by 1/4".

Butttttttttt...It work perfect now! The shift throw is sharp and short, but not too short. I can't believe I waited this long to install one.

that link goes to a front page that goes nowhere - love to see the kit - been looking for a source for 968 kits - i have one, but the company is out of business and it would be a lot easier to just buy more, than to have to remove it to duplicate it

i have a 968 short shift kit from Lindsay racing. its the actual shifter lever. its fully ajustable. you need to buy a momo shift knob as well. mine looks really good and works great. i love it. i got the kit, knob, and shift boot. all together it was close to $300 :/ but its worth it. becuase my old knob and boot was messed up anyways.

flash968 02-19-2008 07:48 AM

yeah, but i am really after sort of both - i'm not looking for the momo setup though - i'm sure it's cool, but i already have plans to build a short shifter that uses the oem knob (more ergonomically correct than the new style knobs, as it should go in the cup of your palm, using only the palm to shift, and not have the hand and fingers on the side of the shifter) - the rear linkage is where i want to make the geometry changes and tighten up the pattern as well as the shifting operation itself - i am just trying not to have to remove it to duplicate it

ya i originally wanted to put the 997 carbon fiber shifter on but... it costs $350, and its not the easyest thing to do. there is another shifter application you can try. its not really a short shift kit but it tightens it up, makes it more precise. more like a ferrari or lambo. you can buy them from www.rsbarn.com, i think its like $90. it replaces the factory rubber one. its not the easyest thing to put on, you have to do some fileling to get it to fit right, but after that ive heard its great. ill be at the porsche swap meet in hershey again this year. if ur there you can always take a look at it.

I used to have short shift kit on my Hondas, but I kind of like the longer throws in the 951. Makes it a little more dramatic I guess? I dunno. I might throw in a short shift kit at some point, though.

The one thing I DID NOT like was the shift knob that came with it; it was an expensive Momo one. I replaced it with an original knob/boot from here and it's so much better. Looks a lot better, too.

Too bad its in storage so I can't remind myself of how much fun it is. I'm going to go cry now.

Well, one of my biggest points was that I wanted to keep the stock lever and knob. I forgot to take pictures (normally I take pics of every mod change), but I'll see if I can still take some. Otherwise you can search on ebay by seller and find pictures that way.

traxxas25 02-19-2008 06:52 PM

ya no matter how expensive the momo shift knobs are alotta them still look like a ricer shifter. my stock shifter, boot, and knob were all jacked up. boot popped up on every shift, rattled, wobbled around. the knob i ended up with is all black leather with a little aluminum on top. and a black boot. matches my console very nicely. i was very pleased with how it came out. my biggest worry was looking like a ricer, WE CANT HAVE THAT. my only dislike about the short shifter is when its 5 degress out getting it into first is just a littttle bit hard. haha

^I guess that is another advantage of putting it away during the winter.

Tim @ Speedforce Racing makes a good one that uses the stock boot and a MOMO knob. It works great.

Just checking in for a friend who has a 968. Is there a good Short Shift Kit that shortens the throws, without just sawing off the shifter. Also, is there a good way to tighten the shifts. He said his has more play than it should. Perhaps some bushings that should be replaced or shims that can be put in somewhere? How can we can we get my friend’s 968 to shift like a dream? I read some of the above posts and looked at the Lindsey one. But was wondering if there’s anything new on the market that may be a better solution than 10+ year old posts might reveal. Thanks!

Have you guys not seen this...it goes on the transmission side of the linkage...I have one and have also been thinking about adding the shifter lever from Lindsey as well to get things really tight or have quicker response through the gears.

That looks like an excellent option. Except it specifically says will not fit 968’s. Has someone found a way to modify it so it does work on the 968? I like your idea of combining this along with the Lindsey shifter. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1556827963.jpg

Sorry about that, really! I forget that all of them (944's/968's) are not the same in the details...I will look around some more and see if I can find something that will work for you. Again, sorry about that.

Shark Motorsport in Germany used to make a nice solid shifter for the 968 which shortened the arm by 18, 56 or 94 mm and reduced the throw by 9%. Unfortunately while their website is still up, it’s hasn’t been updated since 2010

No worries, I know you’re trying to help and I really appreciate that, thank you!

Interesting, I’ll look into that. Sounds like it may be similar to the Lindsey design. Thanks for the info!

only944 hase it too, and much cheaper- https://www.only944.com/partscatalog/only/shifter/
the only thing you will need - to buy a bushing - https://www.ebay.com/itm/944-Shift-Knob-Vibration-Dampers-Bushings-Rubber-Fits-Only944-Shifter-Porsche/162107022879?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid =p2060353.m1438.l2649

by the way, this guy made them for stock lever too

Here is what the seller/maker of the kit (Kyle) had to say about the short shifter for the 968

Hi Paul,

Well, it could be modified to work on an 968, but it wouldn't be easy,
and also wouldn't do too much. The OEM linkage on the 968 is basically a
short shifter for the 944. So adding our 944 short shifter on a 968
wouldn't actually change the shifting distance at all. Porsche realized
that the shifter moved too far on the 944 and shortened it for the 968.
Just one of the many changes they made.

It would probably make the shifter move easier and smoother and get rid
of a little play in the shifter.

But the parts are different. You would need to drill a hole through the
stainless steel rod where the cone shape hole currently is. Then it
would need to be threaded. Then a custom linkage arm would have to be
made, because the way the 968 linkage arm attaches to the short shifter
is different than the 944. All possible but would take some work.

Thanks,
-Kyle

So it looks like you should just freshen up the shifter internals/linkage on the transmission side of your 968, you should get better response or an tighter feel from doing this and then add the Lindsey short shifter since its can fit your car and you should be good to go!

Shark Motorsport in Germany have a 968 SSK that fits at the transaxle. I got quoted 150 euro for it last Sept. I haven't bought any products of these but know the guy that built the 5 cyl audi 944 used their shift lever
shark Motorsport

FWIW I used Kyles SSK on my 944 for several years. When I started driving my 944 after the S3 conversion the shift is noticeably longer. I'd say it's closer to being the stock 944 throw than the Only944 SSK throw.

[edit]just saw 9FFs post :)
