'84 944 Engine removal, what's it caught on??
I'm pulling the engine on my friends '84 944, I was originally going to just do a top end and leave the engine in. But we decided to pull it completly, check it all over, clean and reseal it. Plus I can check the clutch at this time too.
So, heres the problem...the engine is down to the short block, head removed, exhaust is removed, the 4 bolts that hold the engine to the bell housing are out, all hooked up to the hoist. I cant seem to seperate the engine from the bell housing, it will only come appart about a half inch, am I caught up on the throw out bearing and releas fork?? If so how do I get these appart? Thanks Kevin

I know there is a pin which hold in the clutch fork but I can't remember off hand if that would stop you. Do you have that removed. It is pulled from the bottom of the bellhousing.

Mine was stuck pretty tight too. Turned out that the pins going from the bell housing into the motor were hanging and when I pulled them apart straight, it just fell loose.

hi tom, it seems to be far enough apart that the pins aren't an issue, maybe its binding up on the torque tube, like the shaft that goes into the clutch disk. I'll try putting a jack under the torque tub tomorrow and see if that helps.

It is hanging on the clutch fork. It comes out from the bottom of the bellhousing. There is a long bolt that comes out from the bottom and then you can slide the fork out. Getting the bolt out may be tricky if it is stuck in the fork, but some patience will get it done. I wrestled with mine for around a half hour before it come out. Once the fork is out, the engine should come right out.

Why dont you remove the 4 bolts that attach the torque tube to the bellhousing instead? having removed an engine or two, this is by far the simplest method. then you can get to the bellhousing & clutch with the ending out of the car. Much easier that way.

^+1. Be careful you don't mash the hood latch receiver. Going out the top?
