Fixing a broken 924 odometer

Is there a plastic gear inside that wears out? Any idea where to get one or a place that will fix it?

924RACR 03-31-2008 04:58 AM

Yes, it usually cracks. However, in my experience this isn't the same part as the 944's.

I don't believe Pelican sells these? Might have to have a VDO dealer repair it... heard good things about North Hollywood Speedo...

If Pelican does not have the odo gear, try "***************" (Performance Parts) - but i would try Pelican first :)
Or you can send it to North Hollywood Speedo as mentioned by 924RACR if you dont want to try to fix it yourself.

KLA industries has them.
They`re not listed on their website but they have them. As there are a few different speedos that have different number of teeth (14,17, xx) and I believe they are color coded (white, red, xx) count the teeth and email them. Got one some months ago and IIRC was $30.

As 924racr stated they sometimes crack, I was able to use super glue to fix mine (cracked). It's lasted 2 years so far.

mine slid down its shaft (heh heh!) and just needed to be moved back into position and then glued in place. the 924 speedometer is the same as the early 944 speedometer.

Not all 924's, even early ones, have the same speedo... some go to 85, some to 170! :D

good point. but i think they are interchangeable, no? i had a 924 speedometer in my '83.

924RACR 04-02-2008 06:54 AM

The speedos are interchangeable as a unit, yes!

I got my gear at www.odometergears.com. The original had turned into something about the consistency of a "Gummy Bear" and about half of the teeth had sheared off. It is very easy to repair it.

Thanks. Any tips on install or is it straight forward?

looneybin 04-04-2008 09:50 AM

The gear replacement is very straight forward, there is a great write up in clarks garage that covers it very well, except make sure you clean all of the elec connections before you reinstall.
