Pinpointing The Elusive Exhaust Leak

I believe our newly "completed" 86 944 NA project car has an exhaust leak. I can hear something like "PFFFUUUTT...PFFFUUUTT....PFFFUUUTT....." under the hood and sometimes along side the car.

I've crawled around under the car and run my hand all along the muffler, ehaust pipe, cat, and headers trying to feel the puff of exhaust but I can find NOTHING.

Any ideas on pinpointing this annoyance.

The leak is probably between a gasket and a flange somewhere. Too small to detect visually.

A good, experienced mechanic can probably trace it with a stethoscope.

Or, you can buy a mechanic's stethoscope and give it a try yourself.

What you could do is take a piece of paper and put it next to things. if it blows over that's where the leak is.

However, given the work you just did my first guess would be the headers aren't tightend down or the y pipe.
