Transmission clang sound
 

I just painted my car and my interior is bare to the bone. now that the carpet is out, i hear every little thing. there is a grinding sound from the transaxle and when i push in the clutch, i hear a soft clanging (metal sound) inside of the transmission. i know the locations because they are under my seat. are these sounds normal or not?
they are not loud but....

the transaxle isn't under your seat...it is under the rear hatch deck. there's a grinding noise until you press the clutch? then a clanking sound? hmm...throw out bearing going? TT bearings? transaxle? syncros...these all come to mind.

i replaced the clutch about a year ago and don't even know if the "milling", "grinding" sounds are normal since the car has no carpeting whatsoever right now. if i wait...what is the worst that can happen? and what do i listen to or look for? the "hitting" sound sounds like the gears are engaging. should there be NO sound? or is a little sound normal?

These trannys are not super quiet from my experience with them. I just replaced mine with another used one since my pinion gear had a 1 inch hunk that came off and stuck to the magnet on the side cover...put the car on jackstands, start it, put it into 5th gear, let the clutch out and listen to it as it runs from the outside or underneath. BE VERY CAREFUL THAT YOU ARE ON A LEVEL SURFACE AND HAVE PROPER SAFETY STANDS THERE AND SOMEONE ELSE WITH YOU.

You will hear it without load from the car's weight...any weird noises will be easy to hear.

i will try it this weekend. what you are saying is that when driving (load) some of the transmission clang is normal? this sound happens when i let release the clutch.

i figured out the the "milling sound" has something to do with the bearings in the torque tube. how long can i wait before i replace them. what is the level of noise that is allowable.

TT bearings make the shifter vibrate. if running, with the car in neutral and you push/release push/release the clutch pedal...if your hear a "milling" sound when you release the clutch, the release bearing could be rattling, or if the clutch hasn't been changed to a spring centred clutch the old rubber will chatter in neutral...to eliminate the transmission you'd have to get under the car and disconnect the transmission coupler. if the noise is gone while the engine is running in neural, its definitely in the tranny.

Pilot bearing would be my guess.

i will check all of things out. the milling sound is when i am driving. the clank is when driving and i release the clutch to go into the next gear.

Sounds like the clutch disk has gone bad. Is it still the original with the rubber center dampener? If so, the rubber center is torn from the disk.

my (expensive!) porsche mechanic replaced the clutch about 22months ago...ok, i'll say it, two years ago. the clutch is good and he showed me what the "rubber" looked like from the original clutch. i believe that the clutches put in now are all spring type?!
the reason i said "(expensive)" is because i cannot afford a future of repairs done by a shop, so i have begun doing all of the necessary and some, optionals by myself. i replaced the master cylinder, both clutch cylinders, starter, alternator, hoses, vacuum hoses, etc. what is left now is a beautiful speed YELLOW car with the small grinding (that one passenger said of, "wow...great. it SOUNDS like a sports car!" that sportscar sound i think are bearings getting old.
the clang has something to do with the clutch release and it comes from the transmission area itself. it does not happen on 4th or 5th gear (i can't hear it at that speed anyway) but is a notisable light clanking sound as it goes into the next gear. 1 and 2 and 3rd.
