944S trans problems

hello
i have an 87 944S with issues of engaging the rear wheels. i dont know what the problem is other to say that it popped out of second gear after shifting down while moving forward from a red light. car rolls with car in gear and need to hold it with bricks under tires (chock).
can anybody give me a reasonable guess what the problem might be? if it is my 5 spd trans what years can i use to swap it out? i was going to sell my beast but i decided to keep it.
thanks in advance
pedro

With the engine running, can you put the car into gear easily without depressing the clutch? I have seen a clutch disc the had its friction surface literally come apart and crumble and the shifter could be moved into gear with the engine running and the clutch mot depressed. Acted like it was in neutral or that the clutch was depressed. Same symptom of having to chock the rear tires and set the emergency brake to prevent the car from rolling.

Check your rear axles. One may have come undone.

If that's OK, then look at the torque tube to transaxle coupler. See if that is connected/spinning when in gear and not moving.

If everything checks out, then it may be your R&P inside of the transaxle.

My bet is on an axle...

i can put it in gear and start the car without depressing the clutch. nothing happens except the engine will start. this happened to me before on the freeway at 60 mpg but i was able to make it to the shoulder and i noticed the shifter was all over the place. i ripped the cover off the shifter and sure enough that was the problem. the linkage had come apart. easy fix; but now i am stumped
so i would need to jack up the back end and inspect the axles and the tube? or do all 4 wheels need to be off the ground? clutch gave no warning signs of being bad

Check the shift linkage bolt at the gearbox ... they have a tendency to back out or fall out, they should be lockwired.
You'll have a better diagnostic with the rear wheels in the air.
