does a turbo cam tower....

does a turbo cam tower and lifters from a 951 fit into a N/A 944.

fast924S 06-04-2008 05:02 PM

I believe YES, but Im only about 80% sure

thoen 06-04-2008 05:28 PM

8V. yes, same numbers.

Arizona_928 06-04-2008 06:11 PM

thanks! i'm off to ebay :D

nynor 06-04-2008 06:20 PM

it does have different lift and duration on the cam, IIRC.

Arizona_928 06-04-2008 06:40 PM

so would that affect porformance on a N/A for better or worse?

nynor 06-04-2008 06:59 PM

not sure, but i think the duration and lift on the NA cam is higher and longer, so worse. i could easily be wrong, however.

HondaDustR 06-04-2008 07:50 PM

I'm pretty sure I've heard that, too. The turbo people sometimes use NA cams for that reason.

Porsche-O-Phile 06-04-2008 10:05 PM

Yes, an n/a cam is an upgrade to a 951 actually (pretty sure just the early n/a cams).

HondaDustR 06-05-2008 08:38 AM

Why just the early cams? Were they more aggressive, or were the bearing sizes or something like that just different?

Early and turbo cams are the same. A late NA cam is a turbo upgrade.

Since the original poster has an early 944, the turbo cam is the same part number.

Slam 06-05-2008 11:44 AM

^+1 It's also an early NA upgrade.

I don't follow, since the early NA cam is the same as the turbo.

Unless you're saying a late NA cam is an upgrade for an early, in which case that makes sense.

Slam 06-06-2008 10:17 AM

Yeah, that's it. Late NA cam in early NA car. George B set me up with this a long time ago and it did make a difference.

The late NA cam is an upgrade for either an early NA or any turbo, since the early NA cars and the turbos use the same slightly less agressive cam.

Arizona_928 06-06-2008 05:15 PM

that sums it up.

I have another queston but am kinda lazy to start another thread.

what are the lifters? cam followers or what? also if you have a lifter that collapsed do you just have to replace the lifter or is their anything else that goes on it?

i'll take a shot at it.

because you're a cool guy?

nynor 06-06-2008 09:09 PM

the lifters, in our case, are the things that contact the cam and compress the valve springs. if you have a collapsed lifter, you replace the lifter. there are no cam followers (tappets) as such, just the lifters.
