Brake Cleaner into Throttle Body

Last Sunday, my S2 cab conked out on the autobahn. No idle, and it could only run high revs with bad misfiring. I checked out all the vacuum lines and replaced the DME relay. Still no go. Suspected a bad reference sensor.
The AAA guy came to tow it but he first decided to spray some brake cleaner into the throttle body. From previous experiences, I'd guess. Since then, the car has run fine. Even start-up and idle has improved. Weird.
My question is where that crud could've been loosened. I'd like to take out the throttle body for cleaning but I'd appreciate any suggestions where I should be paying particular attention to.
Sincerely,
Francis
