944S2 failed emissions

I just acquired a 1990 944S2 from a location that did not require emissions testing. I happen to reside in a metro area that does. Only failed NO PPM on the 25/25 test (reading was 2041 vs 1163 allowed). All other readings were well within parameters. Previous owner had installed Eurosports performance chip, but I haven't been able to locate contact information for them. Would that possibly be the cause? Catalytic convertor? Unable to register and re-title until I get this one solved.

chip, catalytic converter, vacuum leak, exhaust leak. all are possibilities.

Welcome gdwag,

The common answer is that you have a vacumm leak somewhere. The ICV/ISV hose going in or out has a crack. The big intake boot underneath has nipples that crack. The OEM pinch clamps under the intake are loose and the rubber is dry causing a vacumm leak. Your intake gaskets are bad, The fuel injector "O" rings and hats should be replaced.

Is your car properly tuned up with new plugs-OEM standard and not quad or dual point plugs- and good wires, cap, and rotor?

I hope the PO did not adjust the CPU for the Eurosports chip. If you think he has changed the Fuel-Quality Switch FQS settings read:

EDIT--click on the thumbnail pictures-----Position 7 may work best to pass and then reset. This is just a guess.

If you want to just try again-----the backyard mechanic or shade tree mechanic solution is to have a half tank of gas and add a pint of isoprophl alcohol--more or less depending on the beer intake and mood of mechanic. YMMV and I do not take any responsibility for your car.

The performance chips could be causing you to not pass emissions. Here in Ohio we have collector car plates and all porsches qualify and there is no emission testing done. You might want to contact the DMV and see if yours qualifies. It took me about a month to get everything done and plates in my hand but it was worth it.

Make sure to check your area regarding collector/historic plates. In Missouri you can't drive more than 100miles/year, which is completely and utterly stupid.

Here in Ohio histoic plates are different than collector plates. The main stipulation with collector plates is that it can't be your primary driver. I don't believe that there is a mileage stipulation on collector plates here in Ohio but I only drive mine 6 months out of the year and only put on 1 or two thousand miles anyway.

gdawg,

Here is a recent post relating to my goofy answer of using isopropl alcohol.
One of the other options may work just as well

Gl and I hope you find an answer for your emisions problem.

my bets are on vacuum leak(s). catalytic converter is my second bet. chips are third, as they usually increase the mixture, which is not the problem here.

is the OP even around? he has exactly one post, no replies....
