Recommended oil grade for a 924s is???

Any strong feelings on brand etc?

20w-50. Depends on where you are, though. If you change your oil regularly, it may not matter, but some don't. If that's the case, go with gear oil 85w 90, but only when it's hot out.

Seriously, what's the climate like? Will it freeze in the months coming?

I'm in SoCal, pretty mild in the winter and warm in the summer.

Manuals haven't arrived yet so thanks for bearing with me on the question and you'd be surprised at how little on this topic Google comes up with...

Your climate is not as extreme, but I"d go with 20w-50 anyway. Pick your poison on the brand. Mine has seen many, but mobile one it will never see.

I use Castrol GTX 20-50 summer and 10-40 winter. Arizona car. I agree with Matt.

I've been using Valvolines racing 20-50 with regular oil changes. Here in so cal. the weather can be rather irratic , from the 100's and above to 50-60 degress the next day. The 944 can run pretty hot.

Also, if you were to call the local P dealership, they recommend 20-50

Where in So Cal are you located?

My 924s really likes valvoline 20-50 dyno juice. In fact many of the little oil leaks I had running synthetic went away. I just am very careful to change it every 2500-3k. I have used 10-40 and 10-30 the pressure was a bit lower than I liked. 37psi where as the 20-50 it is at 50psi. both these #'s are with water at 180-190F with oil temp at 80c

what about oil for a car (944 n/a) that sat around for 3 years without being driven? im about to dump in 10w30. the weather is typical to cold climate as Im in MONTREAL, Canada.


Im not going to drive it in the snow, but it will get driven until first snowfall then stored.

10w30 vs 20w50 whats the diff? i heard synthetic in my car would cause all kinds of leaks

Hmmm. 46F degrees October average temperature and 4/5 months of below freezing.

10-40 would be my choice. Again, read what others think on the link in my post above. The idea is to protect your crank and rod bearings-#2 especially, upon startup and severe driving.

Wait.. .. You said three years 3 years it has been sitting ????? Never mind the oil. You have changed the timing belt yes?

Pull the coil wire, after you change the oil and belts, when you try to fire it up.

the funny part about that, I took apart the timing belt cover to start a belt change but alas it was in perfect condition. bizarre, I know.

Changed to 20W - 50 dino this summer. Motor runs smoother and oil pressure is now 4,5 bar under load and 2 bar in idle with warm engine... a raise of more than 0,5 bar compared to a unknown oil from PO.

Timing belt a DIY job if you are mechanically handy but have never done it on a 944 engine?
