help with LSD tranny
I pulled an 87 tranny out of a 87 944S tonight. Car has the option code for LSD. Just before I pulled it out I thought that I had better rotate the axles just to make sure that they rotate the same way. They rotate opposite? Anyway, I pulled it out and it is the correct lsd numbers for an 87S (AGR). Any thoughts? Thanks

I know my 928 transaxle was a torque sensing type where the clutch packs are only active when there is torque forcing the spider gears out. Unlike the lsd's I was used to, There were no springs forcing the plates to grip.

The proper code for a 944S transaxle with LSD is ACR. The open diff version is ACP.
I can turn a P into an R with a chisel.

according to clarks-garage the AGR is the 87 944S for an 87 or 88 which is what the car is.

You know what, you're right. There is a typo in the Technical Specifications booklet for the 94S/944S2. It is supposed to be AGR/AGP, not what I said earlier.
Sorry... That said, you probably owe it to yourself to pop off the side cover and see if there is an LSD pumpkin inside. It could just be that the clutch discs are completely worn out.

Thanks 944. Next stupid question, what am I looking for once inside? Is it possible that someone took out the LSD and replaced with a normal? What is involved in a rebuild? Thanks again.

ok, When I spun the axles with the rotors on the ground and lots of friction they turned opposite. I took the trans and seperated it from the axles and now they turn together as they should? Could it be possible that the shifter in a certain position would do one and another in a different position? I am completely befuddled.

I just had a similar scare on an 86 NA LSD trans I'm shipping out today. I remember driving the car before my friend totaled it and could tell it was limited slip.
Then I jacked the rear up before removing the trans and spun the wheels, They turned opposite!! Then I realized it was in gear. Spun them in neutral and they both turned the same direction. whew! I looked for option 220 on the sticker and it wasn't there!! The trans code on the sticker was 7V? which showed to have M220 according to PET. Once I removed it, in neutral, If I held one drive flange I couldn't turn the intput shaft by hand FWIW there were plenty of options on the car that were not listed on the sticker and the new owner said he had heard of that as well. (he probably thinks I'm nuts after some of our conversations when I was freaking out thinking I had misrepresented it) Good times!!
