Winter oil time
Ok, So its time for me to change the oil in the 924S, I was running 20-50 for the summer but since its gotten really cold in CT I havent drivin it much cuz Im afraid the oil is just too thick for cold starts. So I need to switch and get some final good driving days in before she is parked and worked on for the winter. Im thinking of going with the 0-40 that mobil makes, Any Ideas on this??? Should be good for cold starts and when the engine warms up. Its been about 20 to mid 30 somtimes 40 degrees. What do you guys think before I go and buy a case. Keep in mind I no longer have the internal oil cooler/warmer, Im only running a external Mocal cooler that has a temp thermostat.

Im seeing 150-175*F in the oil pan cruising with Redline 10w40 synthetic on my 951 with stock oil cooler. Its been similar in temp down here also, mid 30 highs during the day. I think thats good, if anything a bit low at 150*F.

I use a SPA Design water temp / oil temp gauge. The water temp is tapped into the upper radiator hose, the oil temp is tapped into the drain plug. Check out my build page for some info about the gauge setup..
http://sites.google.com/site/jjeng951/modifications-1/spa-gauge Ive been very happy with the Redline 10w40. I honestly think im seeing better oil pressure with the Redline than what i was seeing with the 15w50 Mobil1. At Pocono i was getting 3 bar oil pressure coming off into the pits after a 20 minute session, at Lime Rock i was coming off into the pits with 2 bar oil pressure. I didnt have an oil temp gauge hooked up on the car at Lime Rock..i dont even want to know what kind of temps i was seeing. I never got over 210*F with the Redline at Pocono. That alone is good reason to spend the extra money on oil changes. I used to come into the pits on my '87 n/a at over 230-240*F using dino 20w50 Castrol GTX! The external oil coolers really make a difference. Thankfully i wont be driving the p-car this winter. Hopefully the car will never see snow tires ever again .

ok, Im proly gonna go with the red line then, Techno, Why didnt I know about your build page LOL, Anyway I would like to do the same setup on my NA, where did you get that 35mm adapter for the coolant hose??? If you dont mind me stealing the idea could you post links with parts needed?? A water temp and oil temp gauge combo like that would be sweet and easy to see how things are doing in the engine. I am running a 951 oil cooler housing with a Mocal external oil cooler, It would be nice to see how its doing temp wise. Again thanks for answering my question and giving some more info on the other stuff

I am working up to drive my car a bit for the first time in a few months here this week. I am going to do an oil change first as it needs it. I'll be going with some 10w40. That plus a good belt tension check before I fire her up...

You can find the adapter at Summit i think Pegasus also. I bought it from NisSport, they are a Nissan type aftermarket supplier but they make a few different sized adapters.
You can tap a stock drain plug for the sender threads, but i just bought one from WRXTra. They are a Subaru supplier, the drain plug used on those is the same size and thread as the 944. For the SPA Design gauge, pick them up from ScienceofSpeed.com . They have the cheapest prices by far.

how bad is it do you guys think to run 20-50 in cold weather, anyway? I just got some fresh 20-50 in and no sooner than I do, it starts getting into the 30's at night. It does crank pretty slowly in the morning. Winter weather usually sucks around here (read "it doesn't get into the 30's until at least mid December") so I was not expecting it to be cold so soon. Is there much chance of damage from cold starting all the time with 20-50?

The 20w50 is a little too heavy to run in the winter. Although I know people that do run it year around. I personaly wouldnt.
