Engine Vibration
Hey, I want to start out by saying that I have lurked here for quite some time and been able to glean much useful information from this wonderful community. It is now time for me to actively seek information.
Anyway, I have a 1987 944 n/a with an engine vibration. It has 190,000 miles on it and I bought it about a year ago. Besides belts and waterpumps nothing has ever been done with the engine. Since I have had it, it has always had this vibration, I think it has been getting a little worse lately, but that could be that I have fixed just about all the other little annoyance and this is the last one that is really playing on my nerves. The vibration is moderate and manifested mostly through the shifter. It occurs above 2,800 rpms, where the shifter rattles and vibrates and the engine just isn't as smooth as it should be. It doesn't matter what gear it is in or if the clutch is pushed in or not, it is all the same. The vibration occurs primarily when the car is warming up. Right after a cold start it is non-existent, and after the car is thoroughly warm is diminished significantly, but not nearly gone. Recently I removed the air intake J-boot and cleaned the throttle body with throttle body cleaner, this made the car run absolutely perfectly, literally it felt like a different engine. This lasted all of a day and then the vibration returned, and upon multiple repeat applications this has failed to do anything again. So now before I start getting more drastic in my trouble shooting I am seeking advice. Anything would be greatly appreciated, thank you. |

One of your balance shaft sprockets is not installed in the proper keyway on the balance shaft. Very common problem after a water pump change or front engine reseal.

In addition to what 944 Ecology suggested, your BB might be off a tooth or 2. The marks have to align as the WSM shows:
![]() Other vibrations: 900 to 1100rpm----usually soft motor mounts. If original, check for fluid or crushed mount. 2900 to 3300rpm--your rubber clutch disc is beginning to break apart. Remove starter and check for chunks of rubber. Welcome & GL John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |
