Putting an n/a LSD into a turbo trans

Will the LSD unit from a n/a trans fit into a turbo transmission. Is the ring gear bolt pattern the same so the ring gear can be switched over? What problems will I have?

I thought they're the same, except for the fact that the pinion rings blow up?

That is what I am hoping for. Can someone confirm that?

They fit fine I have switched a 1986 951 5R transaxles LSD unit in a early 1983 944 transaxle with 0 problems. They both are still working fine! Just make sure you use locktight on the diff bolts when you install it on the ring gear and get them like 150ft lb's and use a light film of silicone rtv on the side and back of the case of the transaxle when putting it all back together so it doesnt seep gear oil!

is the LSD unit in the N/A identical to the turbo unit? basically wondering if one is larger than the other in any way. if there is a difference are the insides of the transmission case machined identically or would one be machined different for a slightly different LSD unit?

Thanks. I just want to make sure it is going to work. I will be putting an N/A LSD into a turbo transmission. has anyone gone that way before?

The LSD units are all the same. I had a LSD out of a turbo put into a NA trans. Just make sure that you have someone who knows what they are doing shim the pinion gear per the manual when the switch is made. Otherwise you can trash the pinion and ring gears.

Okay I have an LSD from my old 84 tranny and blew the pinion. Saved the LSD and now I want to swap it in. So I bet i could figure out how to swap it through the side cover, but what are the specials procedures need, such as shimming the pinion gear(which idk how to do that)?

You don't need to shim the pinion gear, you will need to swap the ring gear from the good tranny (that matches the pinion in said tranny) to the LSD diff. From there you need to assemble and measure the side play and "drag" of the diff in the housing. Then you need to remove the bearing races from both the side plate and the trans housing to shim the diff bearings for proper centering distance & drag force (more than likely you will need to order at least one shim). If you need info on the above procedure it is located in the factory service manual. If you need that documentation, send me a PM with your email address and I'll email the doc to you.
