944 Heavy gas fumes after a fillup???

After a fill up, the interior smells like gas. I am very careful not to spill any gas on the outside, but the interior is smells like gas. There doesn't seem to be any gas leaking on the outside and the inside lining of the back seats seem dry and don't smell like gas. Any advise on what the situation is? I have to drive with the windows slightly open just to go for a ride!

Pull up the rear carpet and see if any gas is making it into the rear compartment. Believe it or not , in my car , the PO had drilled holes for some reason and the gas was spilling out. I put some screws with rubber washers into the holes and solved the problem. I know there is a stress crack problem with older models, but in my case, this was it. Good luck!

on my car, i smell gas fumes but not heavily, but maybe a sniffle or two. usually because the guy (when i ask for fill up) will just fill it up to the top and spill fuel near and up to the cap. but maybe the filler neck is loose.

If you cannot see gas dripping from the rear after a complete fillup you may have rotted/cracked fuel vent hoses on the top of the tank. Not accessable without taking out the tank.

Not sure if what year of 944 you have??

fuel sender gasket is leaking. or a cracked tank. or the charcoal canister up front is faulty/missing.

Well first I suggest giving up smoking until fixed

Next, Here is a thread on lowering the transaxle to get to the tank. The passion to help on the board amazes me sometimes...
This is also a good "beginner" task for when you do the clutch

Check your gas cap first. Make sure it is tight and secure. Whenever do a fill up, close the gas cap with only one click, not like the pump guy at the gas station
closing the cap with so many ridiculous clicks.

You probably need a new gas cap. If you have fuel tank issue, you will smell gas
outside the car near rear tires after you park the car in the garage.

Our problem was actually the drain hose that connects to the filler neck recess in the body (where you open the fuel door). Instead of being stuck through the grommett on the bottom of the car, underneath the carpet and on the right side of the spare tire recess, it was just dangling in the fender well. Why did I look?

Well, I'm stripping the rear of the car to do dynamat (off-brand actually) and fabricating some fiberglass speaker boxes to go in those fender wells.
