I've replaced the rack pinion and the power steering pump (twice)
The steering is very intensive when car is going slow or stopped. It takes two hands and muscle.... I can't imagine that the steering should be this difficult.... My wife would have problems turning it.... ? Anythoughts? |

Same problems, same car. I even replaced the struts, wheel bearings, and ball joints. I drained and bleed the air out of the system a few times too.
This year, the first year of the 4 years that I have owned it, the power steering FINALLY works. It is not quite 100%, but it is close enough. I have no idea what happened, but I am not complaining. I found my to steer just fine when in reverse but requiring both hand going forward. I posted many times and never got any good input. I would love to know what might be the problem too!

The first thing that comes to mind is maybe the pipe that goes from side to side on the rack has been plugged or is not flowing properly. Not sure what else would make that difficult unless the pump just wasn't working. Did you make sure your rack was centered when you installed it? Here is a picture of what the center should look like on the rack with the wheels perfectly straight. You probably already know this but it's the only other thing I can think of unless the lines are hooked up backward.

When you changed you PS rack, did you change the PS reservoir? The filter clogs. Have you rebuilt your PS pump?. If your pump is weak you have more "wrist" strain. Many kits and very easy to do. Here is a video. http://www.rennbay.com/images/vid/pu...tall_small.wmv There is a plastic line on the PS rack that attaches to the L & R side to equalize the pressure. Is this line blocked? Did you have your alignment checked? Maybe the wheels have a bad case of "Crows feet". GL John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |
