trackday/street legal 944
Considering an inexpensive 3rd car that I could use for track days, autocross and the occasional drive to work.
I was wondering if there a good place to look for "track prepped" 944s? I have been checking CL, Ebay, Autotrader, Rennlist, and the classifieds here. Is there a forum that caters to the 944 hot rod crowd that I have not seen? I would like to find something with two sets of wheels, track suspension, any other "critical" mods for track work but is basically a beater other than that. I have seen some amazing $20K 951s that must have $50K invested with the entire Lindsey Racing catalog thrown at them....outta my league for sure. I was going to search but I could not decide the best way to search.. Thanks |
i've seen a couple of ads for track prepped ones on CL. keep lookin
another idea would be to search on 944spec forums or NASA forums. maybe reach out on the local PCA crowd |
We'll build you one :)

Wish I could have one built!
I saw the 944 spec site and that looked good, nothing availble at the moment. I may post an add on the local PCA site. Good Idea on the NASA I think there is a bunch racing there. Thanks for the tips! |
you can build a spec car for dirt cheap . we build about 2 of them a year for people all over the USA . i have 2 spec 944's one i race and the other is a loaner for people to get seat time with . becouse a 944 cup or spec is based on a all stock 944's they can be built for about 6 grand . the loaner i have i payed 2200 for the car built the cage. the tubing cost was 225 dollars plus time . you can buy a weld in cage for about 800 dollars and have it welded in for about 200 to 300 more . 2 racing seats , 2 5 point harnesses , window nets , fire sys. extra set of 15x7 wheels cookie cutters 50 dollars each . new set of dry tires 1000 dollars ,new set of wets 1000 dollars .then go to the track and have fun . you can pick away at the rest of the car over time . with the loaner car i have about 3800 out of pocket cash in to the car . as for the one i race its some were around 20 grand but the sad thing is the smile on your face is the same after a day at the track !!!!

Where does the cost of the suspension fit in with all that?
|
a spec - cup 944 for the most part runs stock suspension .it can be predated or post dated only from what was offerd on a 944 . you can use canber - caster plates 300 to 400 dollars or do what i did and make them for about 50 dollars in material cost . the loaner car i have does not have any thing more than stock suspension . but like i stated im my last reply . that can be added over time . the 944 spec uses 350 LBS front springs which is the stock spring rate . you can use adjustable spring perchs to get the car balanced and ride hight . its not a must have to go to the track and have fun !i just looked at the invoice for the last suspension we did for a 944 cup-spec car . ground control setup 1,349.00 dollars .

I've got the factory manuals out in the garage that list the different springs offered. I'm going to go take a look. |
here ya go it's cheap but ya gotta come to Cincinnati and get it .... lol http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...ac8787e71b.jpg

the stock springs rates and lengths for the 944 varied model to model and year to year - they were as low as 125lbs in the earlier models, but never got over 160lbs in any year, including in the M030 versions
the specific information for all models is available in the service manual beginning on page 40-13 the turbo cup cars had something a bit different, but were also not that stiff - pete at rs barn has the specifics on those |
there's a prepped 924 here:

I saw the one in Cinci, gave it a hard look, I want something I can street drive a little and the ITS car has no lights, door panels, side windows right?
What suspension does it have? Hmm I was wanting something a little stiffer than the 924. |
