Timing- Can Balance Shafts Be 180% Out?

Hey Folks,
We're presently timing my 1983 944 and were wondering if the Balance Shafts could be 180% off/out? Everything seems to line up as before, but she's sputtering and has great loss of power.
We're getting ready to remove the belts to check the timing mark on the TB/crank gear, but just wanted to check in to be sure.
Thanks,
Mike

balance shafts being off won't cause sputtering. it will cause bad vibration.

true. maybe should just even the cam gear and make sure it's in time with the flywheel. u wouldn't want to be a tooth off.

4-cycle engine, so balance shafts can be off half that and it won't make a difference. The trick for the bal shafts is keyways face up and marks align with timing cover when the sprockets go on. As long as ALL your marks line up you're fine. As stated above, bal shafts off won't cause a sputter, just a bad vibe.
